Most of Evie's belongings were already packed so when Lucas told her about the last minute dinner date with his grandmother and mother, she began to panic.
"What to wear, what to wear." Evie mumbled to herself as she felt a presence arrive at her door.
Winwin.
The male seemed to be adapting to his own abilities well, a lot faster than Evie had ever expected. He was a lot quieter now, and she had noticed that even Ten had trouble picking up his presence.
"Red." Winwin told her, making her turn her head. "Lucky colour, don't you know that?"
"Not really." Evie mumbled, deciding to sit her bottom on the floor instead of crouching.
"Haven't you dated anyone before? It's a classic standard." Winwin said, entering her room.
"Does anyone want to date a girl that's dying?" Evie asked back as she turned her head towards him.
Winwin seemed flustered for a second before he sat down beside her, eyes softened. "I guess that makes the two of us."
"You haven't dated either?" Evie asked, surprised. Considering Winwin's looks, she figured it wouldn't have been hard for him at all to find a girlfriend.
"Fear of strangers, remember?" Winwin told her, glancing at her open suitcase. She watched as he reached over, picking out a red dress and passing it to her.
"Thanks." Evie said quietly, taking the item of clothing from him. "Why are you helping me?"
"Should I not?" Winwin asked, staring back at her. Evie shrugged.
"I don't know." Evie mumbled, not really sure why she asked the question either.
Running away with Lucas was a bold move. Ten didn't really care and was in fact happy that she was finally making a move like that, spreading her wings. She had expected this though.
On the other hand, she pitied Winwin. Even though he had reassured her countless times that the fact that he was a vampire now was not her fault, she still felt the guilt of stripping him from his human life.
"Why do you even hate being a vampire so much?" Winwin asked, eyes on her. "You said you didn't like it, but you never told me why."
Evie couldn't help but wonder to herself why she hated it so much. That's when it hit her.
"I didn't deserve this second life." Evie said quietly, barely loud enough for Winwin's vampire hearing to hear. "I should have died."
"But you didn't." Winwin said, not even bothering to tell her that she should appreciate what she had. "And if you did, you wouldn't have met Lucas."
"It's strange how the world works." Evie sighed, leaning back on her hands. "For such a long time, I hated being a vampire."
"Has that changed?" Winwin asked, tilting his head.
"Definitely not. This sucks." Evie replied, making Winwin giggle. "I hate it, it genuinely sucks. Being immortal literally sucks the fun out of being alive. And honestly, I'm sure Lucas wouldn't have to go through all this trouble if I was still human."
"But if you were still human, you would be dead." Winwin pointed out. "And you wouldn't have met Lucas."
"I know." Evie said, sulking. "Which is why I'm confused on how to feel about all this."
"Just do whatever you want to do." Winwin said with a shrug. "Worries make you age."
"I'm a vampire." Evie said, shooting Winwin a look. Winwin only grinned, giving her a look of innocence.
