"Hey."
Lucas stopped walking as he looked up to see Xiaojun there, leaning on a building, arms crossed.
It was night and the moon was high in the sky. Hendery and the others were out having fun again, but of course, Lucas couldn't due to his own duties. It was no surprise that Xiaojun hadn't gone with them either, the male being the son of the pack's Beta.
"Hi." Lucas said, turning his head towards Xiaojun. "Can I help you?"
"I should be asking you that." Xiaojun said, pushing himself off the wall. "Since you know, one of here has actually found their mate."
Lucas tried not to react to Xiaojun's words. Yes, Xiaojun was lucky enough to have a mate within the pack. Him and his girlfriend new that they were meant for each other the moment the came of age, and it was no surprise to the pack. The two of them had been close since they were pups.
Lucas was the complete opposite though. He didn't feel any sort of connection to any of the other wolves in the pack, not did he long for one. His duties were already more than enough to keep him busy and he didn't need someone else dragging him down.
"A mate doesn't mean anything." Lucas said, more than ready to walk away from the conversation but Xiaojun's next words made him stop again.
"You can't be the alpha without a mate and we all know that." Xiaojun said, letting out a chuckle before walking away.
Lucas clenched his fists, unable to do anything as he watched Xiaojun move down the street, his girlfriend meeting him halfway.
...
"This place sucks." Evie said as she adjusted her sunglasses, not a fan of the sun. She couldn't help but glance at her ring, making sure it was still on her finger.
Well you're not turning to dust, so it's definitely on you.
"We just arrived." Ten said, a deep sigh escaping his lips as he motioned to the building in front of them. "After you."
Evie shot him a look before entering, the two of them making their way to the new apartment. She felt the eyes of the people inside the building on them, their hearts rapidly beating.
"Cute, isn't it." Ten snickered once they were in the elevator. "We make them nervous."
"Whatever makes you happy." Evie said as the elevator stopped and the two of them got off.
Evie grimaced as she caught sight of the apartment. "Why is there so much sun?"
"The blackout curtains arrive tomorrow." Ten answered, causually lifting his suitcases up as if they weighed nothing. "Guess you have to wear your ring for today."
"Ugh. I hate this." Evie grumbled as she plopped onto the couch. She coughed as the dust flew from it and immediately shot Ten a look.
"What?" Ten exclaimed, staring back at her. "I haven't been here for a while, alright?"
