Annie had dozed off while sitting on the floor holding Loki in her arms. She had silently cried till her eyes ached, her throat hurt, and her nose was stuffed up to the point she was breathing heavily through her mouth. She had grasped one hand around the other wrist to keep Loki locked tight in her arms as she rocked side to side.
Loki had calmed, falling back asleep. Since he no longer had Hulk and Thor, they had been dropped in Annie's room, he had gone back to clasping his hands together with them tucked up under his chin. Annie thought he looked like a child at prayer with an innocent vulnerability over his sleeping face.
It was his slow movements as he woke that also woke Annie however she was awake almost at once. The first thing she did was look down at Loki to make sure he was okay, that he wasn't having a nightmare or in some kind of distress. For right now he looked like he was just waking up normally.
A big yawn as he stretched was the last sign of his waking before he opened his eyes. Unlike his waking up only hours earlier, this time he didn't appear startled or look to see who was holding him. He just continued with his head laying against Annie's chest, his fingers gently rubbing together while the only sound he made was the faint sound of his breathing.
Annie on the other hand was trying to think of what to do next. Do I talk about what happened? What do I explain? I'm not even sure what happened. Do I ignore everything because he seems calm? Would talking about it make him upset? Her breath stuttered and Loki moved his head to look up at her.
His green eyes had regained some of their brightness though they were still a little red and puffy. He stared at Annie, his eyes moved across her face. What he was searching for and if he found it was hard to tell, he moved his head back to its previous position as he went back to staring ahead at nothing.
The reality of the situation was that Annie's butt had gone to sleep and her back was killing her from spending hours sitting on the hardwood floor. She needed to get up, or at least try to, she was sure it wouldn't be easy. And to get up she first needed Loki to get up from her lap.
"Hey, buddy?" Her voice was raspy and she had to clear it several times. Loki's fingers had stilled as he waited. "Um, how about we get up and you sit on the couch?" He was still. "I can get breakfast going, or brunch." She gave what she thought sounded like an awkward chuckle, "I think it's more brunch time than breakfast time."
Loki remained sitting, wrapped in Thor's red cape for several long seconds before he moved to stand up. Annie helped him, freeing his feet so he could stand. He turned to look at Annie who remained sitting, they were nearly the same height.
Looking into each other's eyes Annie spoke regretfully, "I'm sorry for scaring you. I didn't mean to, I really didn't." Annie felt her eyes tearing up and she fought against it but a few slipped free. She was about to raise her hand to wipe them away when a movement from Loki stopped her.
Still looking at Annie, Loki moved his eyes to follow first one tear then another run down her cheek. His hand rose and a finger pointed out towards her face, moving closer until he made contact with it. His head tilted just slightly and he frowned with an obvious confusion appearing on his face while he gathered the tear on the tip of his finger. He brought it before his face and just stared at it until he slowly brought it to his mouth to taste. Nothing else moved but his eyes, they looked to Annie while he lowered his hand from his mouth.
She couldn't stop the other tears as they flowed, her throat hurt from its tightness, "I'm crying because I'm sad I scared you." She tried to swallow. "I didn't mean to." His face gradually cleared and she reached up with both hands to wipe her eyes. "I'm not doing so good taking care of you, am I?" She sniffed and wiped at her eyes again.
