(Y/N) POV
"I'm so sorry!" Sarah says
"All good," I mutter as she looks guilty
"You don't need to explain anything, just do your thing," I say as I leave her and Caroline alone
I walk to the living room so see Nancy playing a video game
"What are you playing?" I ask as I recognize the game. It was Miamo, it's a small fantasy game for all ages.
"A game...Mimi I think," she says as I chuckle at how she says it
"It's Miamo," I correct her as she just looks at the screen again without caring...expected for a kid.
I watch her play her game for a while. She wasn't any good at it. But unlike most kids, she was calm when she lost and just tried again.
Eventfully I found myself giving out tips for her. Do this and do that.
Before I knew it, I was as engulfed in the game as she was.
"Bye," Sarah says as she leaves. I look at the time to see that the day has gone by.
"Having fun?" Caroline asks as I shrug
"I think so," I mutter as she smiles
"I'll get started on dinner," she mutters as I nod
Time skip- January 27th...aka Court date (quick disclaimer, this isn't made for realism, so if something happens that would never happen in an actual court, just ignore it)
I waited in the area where they have witnesses and whatnot.
"(Y/N)?" They ask as I stand up
"Your turn," they say as I walk in for a testimony
I walk to the stand and pledge to the court.
I sit down and the questions start coming.
"So, Miss Mansell killed her husband correct?" A lawyer asks.
"She defended herself and that resulted in his death," I say as the lawyer rolls his eyes
"So.....detective, she used a piece of glass to stab the victim's neck...is that right?" He asks as I feel like puking from the choice of words he used
"She used the closest object she could to defend herself. That just so happened to be a shattered piece of Clay," I say as he smirks
"So you're saying that she brutally murdered her husband," he says
"She defended herself and her child, so yes she stopped him," I answer as he smiles
"I'm done," he mutters as Sarah steps up
"What do you think what happened that night?" She asks
"I think that Mr. Mansell got too physical with his family. And threatened the child's life. Miss Mansell then defended her life and the daughter's," I say as Sarah nods
"Do you think my client meant to kill her husband?" She asks
"No," I answer
"And she's under arrest in your home, has she shown any signs of aggressiveness," she asks
"No, not a glimmer," I say
"If you could describe her relationship with her daughter, how would you?" She asks as I think
"I think she is a very caring mother. She shows that cares very deeply for her daughter, and I doubt she would hurt a fly unless it was affecting her child," I say as Sarah nods
"Thank you," she says as she sits down.
I'm brought off the platform and I return to the room was I in.
I wait for a few hours...and finally, the doors open reviling the verdict
Sarah walked out with her head low
"Fail," she says as my heart drops.
I was sure that we woulda won.
I suddenly find myself getting angry as I look into the room at the jury.
"Bastards," I mutter as Sarah smiles
"Yea they sure did fail to try to lock her up," she finishes I look at her
"Start with that next time," I say as my nerves calm down
"Where is she," I ask
"They are going some stuff, head home and I'll return her there," she says as I nod
I walk out of the building lighter than I was going in. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders
"Now she really is a free woman," I say as I walk to my car and return home.
I almost forgot we left Nancy with a babysitter. Caroline didn't want to, but I convinced her that Nancy didn't want to sit around all day doing nothing in a court room...I spared her the boredom
I paid the babysitter and wished them off.
Nancy was still playing that game
"So where are you now?" I ask as she starts describing the level. I faintly remember it from when I played it a while back.
I watched her for an hour before I heard a car outside. I checked and it was Sarah's car, Caroline was getting out and she drove away once she did
I greeted her at the door.
"Your free," I say with a smirk as she smiles ear to ear
She jumped on me out of excitement, she hugged me tight and looked at my face.
Before I knew it, her mouth was on mine.
I was surprised. We stayed like this for a moment...then I pushed her away
"Sorry, I can't," I say as she looks at me. She looked a little hurt...and I'm sure I looked guilty
"Mom!" Nancy says as she hugs Caroline's leg. Caroline didn't look at me for long before turning her attention to Nancy
"Yea, I'm here," she says as they hug.
I leave the front door and head to my room.
I touched my lips as I entered.
I was just kissed...I was just kissed by someone else.
It happened so fast.
I think of my wife. And just how much I loved her, the feeling I had when I was around her.
Was the same feeling I had when Caroline kissed me
