(Y/N) POV
After our trip to the beach. Both me and Caroline have been working to enrol Nancy into school. She'd be starting grade 2 so she would have missed out on a year, but starting somewhere is better than nowhere.
"I'm a little worried...what if she gets bullied because of it," Caroline asks concerned
"Nancy is a smart kid, even with a year head start, I doubt many of them will be much smarter," I say as she looks a little better but not fully convinced
"Could we home school her?" She asks as I smirk
"The reason why we want her to go in the first place is to make friends," I say as she realizes what she said
"Oh, right," she mutters
"Anyway, it'll be fine. I don't know about your academic background, but mines pretty colourful," I say with confidence as Caroline laughs
"I was top of my class back in high school," she boasts as I smile. Caroline was in fact smart. It made me question why she had stayed with her ex-husband for so long...but I didn't ask her, that would be too rude.
"Anyway, I'm sure we can help the school get her caught up," I say as she nods
"I guess your right," she mutters
"Plus, did you see how excited she was when we asked her?" I ask as the woman nods
"I thought she was gonna bounce through the ceiling," Caroline jokes
"She had some air time that's for sure," I say laughing.
True to my word, I got Nancy enrolled in school. The school didn't ask many questions as to why she didn't have grade 1 education...and they even asked if we could wait till 3rd grade so that she wouldn't be joining in the middle of grade 2.
"The sooner the better," I told the office workers and they agreed with my request.
Before long, Me and the two ladies were buying school supplies.
Caroline looked like she was having fun with Nancy...even if it was over something boring like purchasing supplies for school.
I think it was the fact that Nancy was able to go to school in the first place that made her happy.
I couldn't help but watch as the mother-daughter bond.
"Pink or Purple?" Caroline says in a very serious face as she compares pens.
"Pink," I mutter as Nancy fist punches the air
"I guessed right!" She says laughing as I look confused
"We had a contest as to which you would pick," she says as I laugh and nod.
"I thought you liked purple more than pink?" Caroline says
"I do, but with a pen, pink is easier to see in my opinion," I say
"Wow, I shoulda known you'd have a logical reason," she says
"I do for everything," I say as we continued.
We got everything on the list, paid for the stuff. And then headed home.
"Are you nervous?" I ask Nancy as she thinks
"I'm nervous and excited!" She says as I nod in approval
"Good answer," I say pulling up to my driveway.
We unloaded everything and started to put labels on everything.
"You were the kid that no one could steal from because you had your name written on everything...were you not?" I ask Caroline as she chuckles
"I will neither confirm nor deny," she says hiding the truth
"So you were," I say as she smiles
"Maybe," she says.
We packed everything into Nancy's new backpack.
"If I recall, her first day is 4 days away right?" She asks
"Yep, but we have an introduction in 2 days," I say as she nods
"Ok, I see," she says as I notice Nancy passed out on the couch.
"Exhaustion from the Excitement has finally caught up to her," Caroline says as I nod
"She was out and about a lot longer than she usually was today," I say. Nancy had retained her tendency to stay in her room from the past. It kinda hurt my soul to witness her being held up in her room all day.
But slowly, she's been coming out more and has been hanging out with me on the couch as I recovered
Speaking of which, I return to work in little less than a month from now. All the free time with Nancy and Caroline was welcomed, but I needed to return to work soon.
2 nights later, and we were heading to the school with Nancy in tow. It was only a 10-minute walk from my place, so lucky Nancy wouldn't need to take a bus.
"I'll walk you to school every day!" Caroline tells Nancy as the little girl was a little worried.
"What about (Y/N)?" She asks
"Some days maybe, but soon enough I'll be gone during the days too," I say as she looks at Caroline
"Are you gonna be lonely at the house?" She asks concerned as Caroline smiles
"Nope, that just gives me time to clean," she says as Nancy nods.
We entered the school, and the teachers gave us a little tour. They also introduced Nancy to the class she would be with and all the little kids welcomed her with open arms.
By the time we left, any worries that Caroline and Nancy had were gone.
"Still nervous?" I ask Nancy as we walk home
"Nope," she says holding Caroline's hand.
"Good stuff," I mutter
The next time Nancy went to the school, it was the real deal. When she came home later that day. She chatted my ear off about how good of a day she had.
I knew that before long she would dread going to school to learn...just like every kid would.
But it was nice to hear that she had such a good day
