*Helena's POV*
He was giving me a funny look. He knew. I knew that he knew. And honestly? I was glad.
He pinched the bridge of his nose then. I heard him mutter something under his breath. Then, after what seemed like forever, he spoke. "Fine. But if you get hurt again we are both going home."
I felt the muscles in my chest loosen up. He wasn't going to make me leave. He was going to let me stay right here. I wasn't going anywhere. Neither was he.
He stood up then and offered me his hand. I slipped my hand into his, and braced my free hand against the wall to help push myself up. I was on my feet for about two seconds before I fell forwards into his chest.
I could hear his heart slamming under my ear. It was a great sound. "You good?"
I used my hands to push off of his chest. This time, I was steady on my feet.
"Yeah. I'm great."
His mouth lifted into a crooked smile. "Okay. Let's get going."
We left the building through a window. Whatever Leon had done did a pretty good job of destroying this building, and taking the spiders down with it.
We walked for a while. There was still blood in the street. Dried blood, but still blood. I winced at the memory of the giant worm with the woman as a heart. Whoever this was really wasn't right in the head. Not for the first time, I wondered how somebody could be so sick.
"So....Have you heard anything from Ada?"
Sadness sparked in his eyes. I hated that. He loved her so much.
"I haven't. She's been quiet since the incident in China."
My breath caught in my throat. Leon knew I had feelings for him. It didn't exactly take a magician to figure it out.
I would gladly give my life to him.
Before long, I noticed that there were two figures walking in the distance. A long way away, but still noticeable. "Leon."
His eyes narrowed at the figures. "I can't tell who it is. The only thing we can do is follow them. See where it leads."
We set off after the figures across the barren desert.
*Chris's POV*
My mind just kept wondering to Jill and Claire. I had lost them both once. I didn't want to lose either of them again.
O'Connor was still glancing over his shoulder every few seconds. He reminded me so much of Finn. They all started out like this to a certain extent though.
The sun was starting to rise over the edge of the desert. I squinted my eyes. There were buildings of some sort a few miles away. We could probably make it there by noon if we hurried.
We would need to rest for a little bit when we got there. I might could handle the walk without rest, food, or water. Not so sure about the rookie.
I was right. We had reached the city by noon.
Unfortunately it wasn't as safe as I had hoped. There were dead creatures here too. Either Leon or Jake or Sherry had been here. That was the only explanation.
Everywhere we looked there was some type of damage. There were bricks lying everywhere. Broken glass littered the ground. Blood was streaked here and there, making the dry dirt into a red, muddy mess.
In the middle of the street, there was a horse. He was still alive, although I didn't see why he was lying there. Just lying there. I could see his side rising and falling.
"Captain. That horse."
"I see it, O'Connor."
He dropped his rifle and bolted forwards to the young horse. His hands rested on the horse's neck and shoulder. He was saying something to it, but I don't know what.
He moved both of his hands to the horse's back, and pushed with all his might. The horse eventually raised up to where his legs were beneath his stomach.
Then the rookie moved to his head. He put his arm around the horse's neck and pulled as hard as he could. The horse whinnied in protest. Like it wanted to give up, and this two-legged creature would not let him.
After what seemed like forever, the horse sucked it up. He got his front legs under him, and then his back legs followed.
He was still weak, and I saw why. There was a huge gash on his side. There was dirt caked in it. Pus was oozing out of it and falling onto the ground. O'Connor never left the horse's head. He wouldn't let go.
I wasn't sure what to do. That horse needed help or he would die from blood poisoning.
I was just about to mention this when I heard footsteps approaching me from behind. My shoulders stiffened. I snatched my maching gun off of my back, turned, and pointed it at the source of the noise.
Leon and Helena stood there. "Leon? Helena? What are you doing here?"
"We saw you two in the distance. Figured we would follow. Guess we did the right thing."
I nodded my head. "I would say so."
Helena started looking at her surroundings. "What happened here?"
"I'm guessing it was another terror attack. We found this place like this."
"Somebody was here. Not on the terrorists side either. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't kill their own weapons. So who did it?" Leon made a valid point there.
"Most likely either Jake or Sherry. I think they probably headed this way too."
"Maybe we should follow them. Maybe they are heading in the direction of the headquarters of this group." Another valid point, this time from Helena.
"Maybe. But if you go after them, I won't be joining. I got a call from Claire and Jill earlier. They've both been captured. I'm going to go find them."
"Wait. Chris, what if they're at the same place the rest of us are headed?"
I considered that. There was no denying that it was a highly acceptable theory. If I went elsewhere, then I might be going the complete opposite of where I need to be going.
"Okay...Fine. We'll follow whoever this was."
*Sherry's POV*
I'm not sure how long we had been walking. Landon was in front of the rest of us. I swear you could see the anger rising off of his skin. For some reason, he really did not like Jake.
I glanced at Jake for the fiftieth time that day. His jaw was set, as always. His eyes were narrowed like he was pissed at the world.
Yet at the same time he seemed softer.
"You're staring at me."
Oops.
"So what if I was?"
His mouth raised in a half smile. "So that might not be a good idea. I don't want my radiance to burn your eyes out of your skull."
I rolled my eyes. "They probably would have already if that was the case. So...What were you doing before now?"
"Oh, you know. The usual. Helping the opposite team kill innocents, steal, create monsters. It's great pay."
I felt a scowl appear on my face. Which only made Jake start laughing. "I'm kidding. I was actually helping some people out- Asking for nothing more than some food in return."
"Like apples?"
"Damn straight."
