*Sherry's POV*
Our helicopter was searching out our landing point. We would be flying directly over the city until we got on the other side of it. Maybe that would help me get an idea of which strategies we needed to use.
Mr. Donaho, who's real name was Landon, sat across from me. His dark hair was falling over his eyes as he looked out the window. He looked like he was around nineteen years old.
Maybe they gave me a rookie. Which was great. I didn't know how to train anybody. Jake would though. Somehow, I knew that would be a bad idea though.
Landon had the air of one of those arrogant kids someone might see at highschool. He was attractive. He knew it, too.
That's the kind of personality Jake's would clash with. Even though Jake was pretty young himself, he had had a hard enough life in his early years that aged him mentally. Not many people knew his backstory. I don't think anybody did us.
Landon was staring at me when I snapped back into reality. "What are you smiling at Sherry? My sexiness too much for you?"
He stretched his lanky body over the bench he was sitting on. A smirk appeared on his face. I couldn't help but blush. Even though he was a few years younger than me.
"No, Landon. Oh, and you need to take this seriously. We are here to save people's lives."
His smirk faded into a hard line. He sat up straight. "I know. I'm just trying to lighten the mood a little bit. This isn't my first rodeo, princess."
Maybe I was wrong about him being a rookie. "What experience do you have, then?"
He started telling me about some small battles he had been in. They weren't as big as this one. Battles were battles though. "I'm not gonna lie, I'm scared."
His black eyes softened a little. He was more open than Jake. That much was obvious. I opened my mouth to answer him just as the helicopter entered the city.
I saw to small figures dart into an alleyway as some kind of creature started pulling bodies off the streets. There was blood everywhere.
We had just flown over them when a huge pillar of earth darted into the sky. "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!", our pilot screamed.
*Jake's POV*
How she got her turban back on in just a matter of seconds, I have no idea. As soon as it was on, I grabbed her hand and bolted out the door.
We ran down the street. This wasn't easy when the ground under your feet was shaking. I couldn't count how many times we stumbled into the buildings. Good thing our skin was covered, or we woulda been bleeding everywhere.
We kept running until we were almost to the edge of the city. There was a stable here with a few horses in it. They were all terrified, trying their best to hold their heavy bodies up as the earth shook. I pulled the girl into the stable and turned around to face her.
She was crying. I knelt down in front of her before I grabbed her hands. "Listen. I know I'm protecting you. I don't know why though. Why did you hire me?"
She just kept crying. I really was bad at this. "Okay, you can tell me later, then. You owe me that much. Have you ever ridden a horse?"
She shook her head. "Well...You're about to."
I turned away from her. I needed to look at my options here. There was a golden colored horse in one of the stalls. It looked sturdy, but not very fast.
Next to that one, was a spotted horse that looked fast. It didn't look strong enough to handle the distance we needed to travel.
I was just about to move for the golden one when I noticed another horse standing in the back. His eyes were intelligent. He was solid black. He had well rounded muscles in his back and in the spots where his legs met his body. His body was built for strength and speed.
