*Leon's POV*
I stared at Helena after she said that. She kept moving from doorway to doorway. Like she didn't even want to realize what she just said.
Eventually I shrugged it off. We had a job to do here.
Suddenly, Helena stopped. She used her hand to motion me over.
I saw something moving in the shadows. Great. That was all we needed.
We pressed our backs against the wall. The only thing we could do would be either fight, or flee.
Helena disappeared. She was there one minute, gone the next. I looked up to see some sort of spider creature with its horrible pincers around Helena's waist.
She let out a scream as the spider clamped down. I could see blood soaking the edge of her shirt as the spider just squeezed harder.
I raised my pistol and fired. Helena hit the ground, hard. She didn't move.
The spider had buddies. Why couldn't these damn things ever travel alone?
I ran over to her body. Her small waist was torn to shreds. If I didn't get her out of here, she would bleed out and die.
The spiders came at me from all directions. What was I going to do? I couldn't leave. I would not leave my partner to die. I would do everything in my power to make sure she came with me.
I snatched my shotgun out of the holster on my back. They would pay for hurting Helena.
I took out the first three with the shotgun. They flew backwards from the amount of force the shotgun provided.
There were only about four left. I was out of shells, so I switched back to my handgun. These things probably wouldn't go down so easily now.
It took about seven bullets for each spider. They were doing everything they could to get at us. I thought for sure we had this under control.
*Sherry's POV*
The floor above us cracked. Dust fell down, peppering Landon's hair.
"Great. There goes my beautiful hair."
We stood up. Something was here.
The floor gave way completely almost as soon as I said that. There was a creature standing amongst the rubble.
It looked like a cross between a lizzard and a centipede. Its body was thick, like leather. It had hundreds of legs. It's tail was lashing the air as a whip.
"This night just gets better and better."
Just like the pictures I had seen of other creatures that were responsible for all the destruction and death here, its mouth dripped acid. I could see it burning through the floor or rubble where it landed.
The tail lashed forward when I raised my gun. It wrapped around my wrist, and slammed me onto the ground.
I felt the air leave my lungs. In this line of work, you would think we would be used to pain. Ha, nope.
As I was catching my breath, I saw Landon spring into action. His lean body left the floor in what looked like a split second.
I rolled onto my stomach so I could see him easier. He was using his bare hands to punch at the creature. He fought a lot like Jake.
I swear, you would think these two guys were brothers.
Landon kept pummeling the creature. Whenever it would lash out, he would dodge it expertly.
He moved like a fish might move in water. He was accurate with every single punch and kick. Within ten minutes, the creature was exhausted.
And so was Landon. When the creature finally stopped moving so much, Landon pulled his knife out of the sheath. It took all of my control to remind me that he wasn't the demon I was supposed to be fighting.
He released a cry that sounded almost inhuman as he stabbed the monster in the back. The lizard died with a hiss. But it didn't dissolve.
Landon walked over to me and offered his hand to help me up. I grabbed his hand and pulled.
Once I was on my feet I could get a better look at the creauture. I was almost out the door when I noticed Landon hanging back.
He motioned me over to him. After watching him filet that lizard, I wasn't about to argue.
"What is it?"
"You remember that giant worm the boyscouts helped us kill? Well, the boyscouts and your boyfriend?"
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Yes I remember. Why?"
"The heart was made of a human. A woman to be exact. Actually, she was the heart."
I bit my lip. What was he getting at? Surely a human body couldn't be what was keeping these creatures alive.
Landon kneeled down by the carcass and took his knife out of the sheath again. It was a long blade, very elegant like it could have belonged to royalty at some point.
He plunged the knife into the dead monster's belly. I half expected the thing to start hissing again. After the adventures with Jake, or even my own father when I was young, had taught me that sometimes these creatures merely played dead.
Instead, acid poured out of the hole in the lizard's stomach. Landon had to jump backwards to keep it ffom dissolving his legs. And yes, I mean his legs. Not just the clothing.
When the flood of acid stopped, he peered into the creature. "Damn."
That was all he said. He just stood there, staring. I walked over to him.
I almost puked. Apparently these creatures did use humans as hearts. This one in particular was run by a small child. She looked to be about seven or eight years old.
And she was still alive. Even with her veins running into the dead creature and her skin attached to it's skin, she was alive.
"M-Mommy?," she asked quietly. I wanted so badly to scoop her out of the mean creature that held her small frame captive.
But we all knew she would never survive it even if I did. We could see the life draining out of her. Her mouth was turning blue.
I moved toward the carcass but Landon beat me to it. He reached his hand inside the creature's body and grabbed her hand. Acid was dripping onto his skin but he didn't even flinch.
He held her like that until she died.
