*Leon's POV*
I sat with my arms crossed over my knees. My forehead was pressed against my arms. The rest of the group had fallen asleep a few hours ago. Probably around midnight.
My mind had been racing all night. I couldn't stop thinking about the past missions I had been on. Even the first one, which had been completely unintentional.
Claire had been with me for that run. So had Sherry, who had only been a little girl then. She had grown up beautiful, and strong.
I wondered how Ashley was as well. After we had gotten back to America, we had only exchanged a few words. She was living her own life, possibly expecting a baby now.
I heard sand shift a few feet away. My hand immediately went to my pistol. I snapped my head up, ready to draw my gun if I needed to shoot.
Helena was standing there. I could see her bare skin just under the edge of her shirt, above the line of her shorts. The strings from the stitches were also visible.
"Leon? What are you doing up?"
She sounded tired. Like she just woke up.
"I couldn't sleep. Too much stuff going on. Too much stuff in the past."
She laughed, putting her hand on her injured side. "You never seemed like one to dwell on the past. I thought that was Chris's job."
I felt the side of my mouth quirk up. "It is. At least, mostly. But there's no crime in thinking."
She sat down next to me. "There is if it keeps you from sleeping at night Leon. I don't know what's going on. I'm not going to pretend like I do. I'm not going to ask either. I just want you to be okay. Tomorrow...Tomorrow could be the last time I see you."
I raised my eyebrows. "Don't talk like that Helena. Don't."
"Leon. If I have to I will sacrifice myself for all of you. You know that. You are the same way."
She started tracing patterns in the sand with her pointer finger. "I don't want to lose you, Helena."
She raised her eyes to mine again. "I don't want to lose you either Leon. But eventually one of us is going to die or become infected. You remember when you had to go to Europe. The only reason you are here is because you found a way to remove the parasite. Piers was not that lucky. There is no gaurantee that either of us will be the next time either."
She was right. She knew she was right. I knew she was right. There was no changing it.
*Jake's POV*
We had made good distance over the desert. Along the way, we had made a few stops. Sherry had managed to convince the young girl to change out of her heavy robes and the thing she wore on her head.
She now had a belt with a weapon on it. Redfield was the only one that had objected to that.
Whether he liked it or not, she was part of this now. She would be until the day she died.
The young girl had stopped with her hand over her eyes. She was looking at something in the distance.
"That's it. We are here."
All we could see was a small house from where we stood. Instead of being made out of clay like most of the houses around the country, it seemed to be pretty modern. Kinda like something you would see on an American beach.
"Kid, are you sure you've got this right? That just looks like a house."
She turned toward pretty boy before answering his question. The look on her face was one of pure annoyance. Who could blame her? He was a twat.
