san woke up to nothing. no delicious aroma of breakfast food, no soft snores from beneath him, no arguing between his best friend and his boyfriend. absolutely nothing. and definitely no wooyoung.
san sighed. he had to remind himself every day that wooyoung was gone. every day, he'd wake up, realise wooyoung wasn't here, and then get on with his life. the billionaires' jewelleries and black cards aren't just going to steal themselves.
yeosang had stopped talking to san afterwards, and even when they see each other in the living room or something, yeosang would leave once san enters. yeosang was mad at him, he knows that. but san had his own point as well. finding out your boyfriend was an assassin sent out to kill you? it's not the most pleasant event.
"san." yeosang voiced, which caught the younger by surprise. it's been a week since wooyoung had left and it was the first time yeosang had call out to san.
san turned around, sipping the coffee in his hands and nodding, indicating that yeosang could continue. yeosang sighed, "do you regret it? telling wooyoung to go. i know- i know you didn't, but you know, in general."
san put down the cup of coffee on the kitchen counter, sliding his hand across the marbled surface as if that would bring wooyoung back to him. san looked down, the images of wooyoung cooking and him messing around with the smaller boy appearing in his imagination. san smiled bitterly, "yeah."
yeosang glanced up, "you do?"
san's smile didn't waver as he looked up at yeosang, "yeah. i-i miss him so much, yeo." that was the breaking point for san. tears were rolling down his cheeks and he collapsed on the floor, burying his face in his hands as he hiccuped and sobbed.
yeosang's shoulder slumped at the sight of his best friend. san was never like this. san always kept himself together and his emotions in check. he was never someone to just burst out and cry like how he is right now.
yeosang went over and wrapped his arms around san's torso, rubbing the boy's back as an attempt to calm him down. the two stayed there for a while, at least until san had stopped crying. yeosang was sitting in front of him now, still rubbing san's forearm and smiling weakly at him.
"you know, i miss him, too." yeosang said, eyes not leaving his hand on san's forearm, "i miss arguing with him so, so much. it brings joy to my life and it makes my boring days less dull. he's like our little sunshine."
"yeah," san sniffed, using his other hand to wipe the snot escaping his nose and glanced up at yeosang, "yeah, he really is."
silence overtook them as they just sat there, thinking back to the times when wooyoung were still with them. all the memories were too much for both of them right now, but that's the least they could do while wooyoung's gone.
all of a sudden, yeosang's phone rung. it startled the two best friends but yeosang had collected himself and went to pick up his phone. yeosang frowned at the contact name shown on his phone screen. he clicked 'accept' nonetheless.
"seonghwa ssi?" yeosang muttered into the phone, confused why the older man would call him all of a sudden.
"are you alone right now? is that san boy with you?" seonghwa asked. yeosang glanced back at san, using his finger to tell san that he has to go into the bedroom to talk on the phone. san nodded and yeosang quickly scurried into his bedroom.
"i'm alone, yes. what's happening? why are you calling me all of a sudden?" yeosang asked. he sat down on his bed and bounced his right leg — a gesture he'd do when he's anxious or nervous. practically the same thing, but anyways.
seonghwa sighed, "it's wooyoung. he-"
"oh god," yeosang covered his mouth as he choked up, "park junwong got rid of him, didn't he."
"what?!" seonghwa yelled into the phone, "no, he's not fucking dead. what made you think that?"
yeosang swallowed the lump he felt in his throat as he let out a sigh, feeling the pressure on his chest fading away, "oh, thank god. u-um, nothing. anyways, why are you calling me?"
seonghwa scoffed, "i was just wondering why wooyoung came back, that's all. i wasn't- where did you even get the idea of park junwong getting rid of him?"
"uh," yeosang scratched the back of his nape, "uh, nothing. anyways, yeah, he went back to kill park junwong and i was just, you know, i was just scared."
seonghwa was silent for a moment and then there were some shuffling, "well, i know that. i need to know why, yeosang ssi."
"i don't think i'm the one you should be asking why." yeosang said firmly, "as much as i want to tell you, it is still wooyoung's story to tell. i think it's best if you ask him yourself."
seonghwa sighed loudly and there was the sound of seonghwa sitting down, a long breath out this time, "you think i didn't ask that? of course, i asked that! he wouldn't tell me. and now i'm relying on you to tell me that. yeosang ssi, please, please just tell me why he's like this. he's never like this. never. and i've known him for four years. i know it's not long, but it's long enough to know that he doesn't- never act like this."
yeosang bounced on his leg for a couple of times before sighing, "fuck, don't you dare say it you heard it from me."
"thanks, yeosang ssi. now, please, tell me."
and yeosang did. he told seonghwa all the details about how san found out, how wooyoung was bursting into tears — maybe he exaggerated that part but seonghwa didn't need to know — and how wooyoung just left that night without saying anything.
seonghwa sighed and yeosang could tell the older boy was frustrated by it, "oh god, he's so stupid." seonghwa muttered.
yeosang chuckled lightly, "yeah, he really is."
"well, is san doing okay?" seonghwa asked, "n-not that i really care about him. but i know wooyoung cares about him a lot, so-"
"yeah, i get what you mean." yeosang smiled, "yeah, but no. san's not doing good. he's been... off and emotional lately, which is something you don't see with san. san's always calm and collected, he doesn't like to show his emotions. what happened to him in the past had changed him and turned him like this. so, all in all, san isn't doing well. not at all."
seonghwa sighed, "neither is wooyoung. i tried encouraging him to go talk it out with taehyung ssi — it's one of his friends from back then — and he did go there. but i could tell it didn't go well. wooyoung came back gloomier than ever and taehyung ssi was the only one i thought of that could cheer wooyoung up. also, wooyoung's been refusing to go out and, well, you know wooyoung. it's unlike him to just not want to go out."
yeosang pinched the area between his eyebrows and let out a breathless chuckle, "being apart from each other without a good reason is really putting a toll on them, isn't it?"
"yeah." seonghwa muttered. he cleared his throat and said it again, this time louder.
"well, please keep me updated with what's going on with wooyoung, seonghwa ssi. that would be nice." yeosang mentioned and he could hear seonghwa humming on the other side of the phone.
"yeah, of course. stay safe, okay?"
"yup, you too. thank you, seonghwa ssi." yeosang thanked.
seonghwa chuckled softly, "don't thank me. you take care of yourself and choi san, i'll take care of jung wooyoung. bye bye."
"bye."
yeosang hung up on the call and put his phone down, laying his head down on his palms and tried to make reason out of this situation. the soulmates were already so affected by this separation. if wooyoung gets killed by park junwong...
does that mean san dies, too?
