September 2014

I just got home from the campus when Eddy is in the middle of his snack time. I smile watching him chewing some cookies I have in a jar, then walk up to him.

"Is it good?" I asked.

Eddy glances to me, swallows the food inside his mouth and stare at me in silence. He didn't seem intend to answer the question.

I keep my smile on my face. "I'm home, Eddy."

Eddy nods slightly. "Welcome home."

"Have you been a good boy while I'm gone?" I asked again. "Has anything happened?"

Eddy shakes his head. "No."

"Okay then," I let out a breathe, then mess with Eddy's hair as usual. "I'll cook you some dinner soon."

I walk to the coffee machine. I need something to keep me awake tonight because I have to check my thesis again. My supervisor finally approves the whole thesis I made, and I need to re check it before I submit it to the campus. Then maybe, I'll play a bit to refresh my mind.

After making some coffee, I grab some meat and eggs and all of the ingredients to cook. I'm going to make some beef stew for dinner.

I quickly do all the cooking while Eddy just stares at me from his seat, didn't do anything but watch until I'm done.

It really is still awkward around here, seeing Eddy didn't light up one bit all these months he spent on my apartment. He rarely talk or smile. The room felt tense, yet I didn't know how to make things better.

I just... being a good friend to him just to cover myself from the fact that I consider him more.

"Here." I place a bowl of beef stew to Eddy, then sits in front of him. I serve the whole pan on the middle as I eat mine too.

"Thanks, y/n," Eddy said before he eats. He sips his first soup and he closes his eyes for a sec, feeling the warmth of the broth.

I smile seeing that. "Taste good?"

Eddy silents when he hears me, then look away. He nods his head and continue eating, which makes me chuckles.

I guess he's shy.

Dinner with Eddy go in a silence. The clinking sound of spoons and forks filled the dining room, without any conversation from us. Two best friends that used to talk so much to each other, now shut their mouth as if they never really close. Either me and Eddy just busy with feeding our belly with food.

"Hey," I try to cancel the tension. "My supervisor approved my thesis today."

Eddy look at me for a moment, making me somehow nervous. He sips his broth again before answering. "Really?"

I nods and smile. "Yeah. I finally one step closer to graduation."

"That's good then." Eddy answers casually.

I tilt my head down, Eddy seems didn't interested with the topic. I take a few bites again silently, trying to find another topic to extend our conversation. But, what?

I could ask him about his thesis. But, I didn't dare. His mood about campus is already down. I think it's a bad idea to brought that up, even though I wish he would continue it.

I looked back at Eddy. The man have almost finished half of his dinner. His face is still flat, as if the food didn't have any effect to him at all. Everyday is always like this. To be honest, I'm happy just because he's still eating well, despite of his incredible sorrow.

"What?" Eddy suddenly look at me in confusion.

"Hm?" I'm a little startled with his small voice. My eyes widen, then quickly shakes my head. "I-It's nothing."

"You looked at me that long, you sure it's nothing?" Eddy said again.

"Uh..." I looked down again, trying to find a good excuse to get away from his curiosity. But my mind had instantly froze when Eddy suddenly asked. How to answer him without making him suspicious?

Eddy sighs, then he stands up, as I look at him again. "I'll be at the piano again. Thanks for the dinner."

"O-Oh..." I stare at his movements, as he lift his dishes to take it to the sink, then he immediately leaves the dining room.

I didn't say a word to him, my heart dropped. I felt like it won't help him if I answer anyway.

"I'm worried about you..."

The next day...
I wake up to a mellow notes tingling my ears. Sounds like a different tunes this time. I slowly open my eyes, then turned to the clock on the wall.

I look around for a moment and stopped at the calendar. As my ears enjoy those beautiful notes, I stare at the date.

It's September 10th again? Time sure flies so fast.

I sighs for a moment and ponder. I have been too busy for myself haven't I? I usually happy when this time come around, but I actually didn't remember that today is my birthday.

My mind flies to my last year's birthday. That time Eddy just came here and he's far more terrible than he is now. I didn't get to celebrate it with him and he didn't even remember that it was my born day. I cried myself in my room because of it.

I guess that horrible nightmare made me want to forget about the day I open my eyes in this world. And I did, apparently.

"Maybe I should buy myself some cake today?" I said to myself.

I walk out from my room and see Eddy plays the piano again.

He glances to me and stops playing. He nods his head. "Hey."

I smile slightly. "Good morning, Eddy. Did you eat breakfast already?"

Eddy shakes his head. "Not yet."

"I'll go make you some pancakes, then." I quickly leave the room and starts cooking at the kitchen.

It's on purpose. I didn't want to ask him about today. I don't want to have hope that he specially prepared something for me since he's still love Kelly. All this time, I don't want Eddy to know that I have feelings for him either.

"Uh... Need any help?" Eddy comes to the kitchen and approach me.

I smile to him while I cook the pancakes. "I-It's okay, Eddy. You can sit nicely until I'm done."

There's no words anymore after that, we both eat our pancakes and drink some tea too. I quickly go to my room again to get ready.

"Eddy, I'm going out, okay?" I said to Eddy who's back again at the piano. "Make sure the apartment's safe. Take care."

I quickly go to the front door.

"Wait!" Eddy walks fast to me. "Uh... will you... be late, y/n?"

I silents for a moment before answering. "Um... probably. Why?"

"Uh... okay. Never mind." Eddy's voice seems to weaken. His head tilted down.

"Eddy?" I turned my body to him and look at him curiously. "What's wrong?"

Eddy shakes his head, then he looks at the ground. "No, it's nothing really."

"Hmm... I'll be off then." And I just step out like that, bringing my confused mind away from him. Even though I'm curious.

Meanwhile later on, little did I know, Eddy seems to look at an object on his hand as soon as I left. His expression faded as he look at it.

He shakes his head once again, then just stepped in from there, back to babysit the apartment.
