Wait wait wait before we start I just wanted to say that i'm writing on an actual computer for the first time so bear with me... It might get a little sloppy and inconsistent...

___

People who claim that they're evil are usually no worse than the rest of us... It's people who claim that they're good, or any way better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of.

___

"It is very powerful," the brother said, almost in defense of his previous statement.

After a moment of awkward silence, Clary took the lead. "Brother Joseph, thank you so much for your offer. We're so sorry to have wasted your time, but we should try to look for an option with... lower costs. Thank you, though," she finished lamely.

"We understand,"  was all he said.

Brother Enoch showed them to the surface, and the group returned to the Institute, unsure of what to do next.

___

Jace looked himself over again. He could still see nothing phusically wrong, other than a broken nose, a split lip, and a skin-and-bones profile.

He would have lauged at the irony if his stomach hadn't hurt so much. He, Jace Herondale, the best shadowhunter of his age, who had escaped the clutches of two of the worst villians of his time. He, Jace Herondale, who had died and come back to life, who had literally been to hell and back. He, Jace Herondale, was captured and renered helpless by a girl half his size. He hoped it had taken more than just her to beat him in a fight.

Clary. Clary. What if something had happened to her? What if he felt so empty because the had -gotten to he-

No. Alec. That's why he felt something missing. Because something really was. His parabatai rune.

If they had taken Clary, or Alec, or Izzy, or Maryse, or even that ridiculous Simon, even Robert, he was going to make them pay, whoever they were.

___

"Okay, so... the Silent Brothers were a bust, what now? Who else knows about runic magic?" Sometimes Izzy had a way of voicing what was on everyone's minds.

"We could ask Magnus. He's really old and probably knows something about parabatai," Alec volunteered.

"Good idea. Let's go," Izzy said, getting up even before she finished her sentence.

Clary drew a portal rune, and they ended up right outside the door to Alec and Magnus' house.

Alec pressed the buzzer.

"Who dares disturb the magnificent Magnus Bane?" he boomed into the speakers.

"It's me."

"Hello, love! Why didn't you just use your key?" It was remarkable to hear the change in his voice.

"Because I thought you'd be mad if I brought..." He turned around and counted, "four shadowhunters and a vampire with me?" he said, almost like a question.

He buzzed them in, and they went up.

"I take it this isn't a social call," Magnus said, eyeing Robert standing in the back of the group. "But do sit down, I'm not busy."

They filled him in and he sat and thought for a moment before leaving them alone for a few minutes.

He returned, blowing dust off of a very old book.

"How the hell do you have so much dust on your books? I don't think that's physically possible," said Simon, seemingly oblivious to the way everyone was looking at him.

"Do us all a favour, Sheldon, and shut up," Magnus said. Continuing as if nothing had happened, he said, "A complete history and encyclopedia of the Parabatai rune," he read, "Banned by the Clave years ago. And dont even think about reporting me, because the Clave sure as hell won't let you use their copy," he said, directing the last part mainly at Robert.

"Why was it banned?" asked Clary

"I don't know. Why does the Clave do anything? Probably someone looked at them the wrong way while they were holding the book," he said, his voice only partly sarcastic.

They opened the book to the chapter entitled 'Terminations of the Parabatai Bond' and, couging from the dust began to read:

'The sacred parabatai bond can be terminated only six ways. They are listed below.

The first, and most common way is through the death of one or both members. Shadowhunters who have lost their parabatai often report a feeling of disconnection or a falling sensation. This process leaves a scar, much like a scar left by any other rune.

The second way is for one or both members to havve their marks stripped. This would happen to any law breaker. If a romantic interaction occurs between parabatai, then the parabatai rune only will be stripped from the offenders' bodies. The shadowhunter who's parabatai has been stripped of their marks will still have a scar in the place of the rune.

Another way that parabatai bond is terminated is when one or both members become vampires or lycanthropes.  As detailed above, a scar will remain.

The rune can be disfigured beyond recognition with a stele by a shadowhunter who is skilled with runes. This also will leave a scar.

Contrary to popular belief, there are two more ways to either temporarily or permanently suspend the bond. The first is for one parabatai to be taken to such a place where runic magic does not exist. The parabatai who is left behind will lose the mark altogether, as well as any other mark of bonding, such as a marriage rune.

The second is for a special type of warlock, a tenebris warlock, to perform a spell. This spell severs all angelic power from the body, in luding the capacity to support runes. Any runes that are on the body at the casting of the spell will be removed. This spell can be undone, in theory, however the knowlege of how to do so has been lost for centuries. It has only been attempted once, so the effects on the other parabatai are unknown.'

___

Clary lay in bed, worrying about Jace and thinking about all they had learned that day. She had never heard of anywhere where runic magic didn't exist. Even hell had runic magic.

Alec, who knew many languages, had informed them that tenebris was latin for dark, which everyone found to be ominous and disturbing. She knew that everyone, even Simon was anxious about all that had happened as well as what was to come.

After hours of her mind running in circles, she fell into a fitful doze, only to be jolted awake several hours later by a hand on her shoulder.
