Jace had been missing for days, and the team was out of ideas of what to do.

"Do you get the feeling my parents are hiding something from us?" Izzy asked Clary and Simon one morning, over horrendously dry soup she had concocted (idk how that's possible but Izzy could probably do it).

"Now that I think about it, maybe. You know, they have been really distant and kind of shady recently," said Clary.

Simon was nodding along, indicating that he had noticed this too.

"Do you think Alec knows about it? He knew about the Lydia thing, and maybe it's something that only adult Shadowhunters know," Izzy put in.

It was a good thought, and Simon said so.

"Okay, fuck it I'm asking him." Izzy said after a long pause. "He probably could use the social interaction anyways, I don't think he's seen another human being for days," she added, seeing the others' shaking heads.

Izzy climbed that steps up to her brother's room. Before she could stop herself or tell herself what she was doing was a bad idea, she knocked on the door.

"Go away," Alec sniffled.

"No, Alec, I'm coming in. This is important."

Izzy opened the door, bracing herself for the worst.

Alec had definitely lost some weight, which wasn't good. He had been almost too thin before. There were bags under his red eyes, and he was wearing the holiest sweater he had.

"I thought Mom made you throw that thing out," was all she said.

Alec stared at the wall, willing his sister to go away. No such luck.

She sat down next to him, clearing away tissues.

"Do you know if Mom and Dad are hiding something from us? You wouldn't know exactly, but maybe there's something only adults know that might have to do with the Jace situation," Izzy said.

"Nope. There is some huge story apparently that the Clave tells you when you turn eighteen, but I don't know it. That may be it, and they legally can't tell you. I don't know it though. The clave doesn't trust me because I'm gay"

Izzy was outraged at this. "That's unfair! Why does the clave have to be like this?" She stormed.

"No. Izzy. Calm down. It's my fault. I hate myself so much wish I was straight," he vented.

"No, Alec. No. Don't say that. It's not true. First of all, you can't change who you are, and second, why would you want to? Don't be someone else. Live your way, and screw everyone else. Screw the Clave. Screw Dad if he doesn't approve. Screw everyone who thinks that there's something wrong with you because you like boys," Izzy was pretty proud of herself for coming up with that speech on the spot, but Alec just cried.

She gave him a hug, and he sobbed into her shoulder. "Haven't you ever thought about how much easier everything would be if I wasn't gay? For one thing, I would know whatever it is you guys need. By the Angel, I wouldn't even be sad right now. I probably would have settled down with some shadowhunter girl. I wish I was like Mom and Dad. Even Jocelyn and Luke are better. Hell, what Aline and Helen have is better that what I had. At least they're the same fucking species," he wailed.

Izzy didn't know what to say. She had always fancied herself good with relationships, but this was out of her league.

She sighed. She hated seeing her brother that sad, but there was nothing she could do.

She gave him a long hug, let him shed more tears, and left.

"So they are hiding something," was the first thing Izzy said when she met the others. "Alec said there's something, but he doesn't know what it is," she continued.

"Should we ask your parents?" Asked Simon. He didn't relish the thought more that anyone.

"Why not," Izzy said, "We are supposed to be working together, after all."
