Tessa had just demonstrated using to coffee maker for the eighth time, but he still couldn't seem to get the hang of it. Fumbling, he poured water and inserted a filter. The only thing he missed about being a silent brother was not having to eat and drink.

The coffee maker beeped, and Zachariah poured himself a cup of the steaming liquid. He cursed and winced as he slopped it on himself.

The coffee seemed to get hotter and hotter on his shirt, until Zachariah saw with widening eyes, it burned through the thin fabric of his shirt. His skin became shinier and began bleeding, and still the coffee continued.

Tessa walked into the room from the bedroom. She stopped dead, eyes fixed on the body of her lover, with a bloody hole the size of a basketball in his chest.

*TID spoilers begin*

She bent over the motionless body, not caring if she got blood all over her pants.

"By the Angel. Jem. Don't be dead, please, please stop being dead." She laughed bitterly, clutching the lifeless form of James Carstairs, the young, white-haired boy who was caring and sweet. He was the boy to whom she had been engaged. Innocent, perfect Jem, with his violin and Victorian manners.

*Spoilers over*

Tessa tried to tell him she loved him, but the words died on her lips. She supposed this was the curse of immortality: loving and being loved could never last, doomed as she was to watch others around he grow old.

At least she never saw him get old and grey, watching his life force slowly flicker into nothing.

"By the Angel, I- I don't know what to say. I'm so sorry. Words can't do it justice, can't do him justice."

Clary was on the phone with Tessa, and the others were looking on worriedly and questioningly.

Shadowhunters did not shed tears, however when Clary explained the sad news, Izzy's eyes went suspiciously glossy. When she described the mysterious circumstances, any vulnerability that had been showing was immediately wiped away.

They had vengeance to take, and a missing person to find. There was no time to lose.
