At Taki's, Alec sat in stony silence. The others were socializing, even joking around a little despite the grim situation. He was disappointed that Jace had come and seen Izzy but not him.

He wasn't in love with him anymore, but it still stung to see how little he apparently meant to Jace.

He had only just resolved to stop pining over Magnus, and maybe even find someone else. It really seemed like the universe was slapping him in the face repeatedly.

"What do you think, Alec?" Clary asked, jerking him suddenly out of his reverie.

He hadn't been paying a scrap of attention to what was being said. "Sorry, what?"

Clary sighed audibly. She repeated in a tired voice, "What are we going to do about the Institute? We need to find out who or what is threatening it and how serious they are about it."

"I don't know," he said defensively, "why would I know?"

"Sorry, just asking. You know the expression leave no stone unturned," Clary said, clearly exhausted.

"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap."

For Alec's benefit, Clary restated what she had been saying, about preventing her runes from becoming more powerful. She thought it may have been because of her parents being of different sides as well as the Angel's gift.

Resolving to be more helpful, Alec suggested, "We can't get the Clave involved. It won't do shit unless we have the threats in writing, but our attacker is too smart for that. All the messages disappeared after we read them."

Simon suddenly piped up, having been silent most of the time so far. Unfortunately, it wasn't helpful. "You're being really pessimistic here. Do you have an idea or not?"

Alec gave Simon the bitchface he had been perfecting in Edom before retorting, "I was getting to that.

"Remember Brother Zachariah?"

The others nodded mutely.

"Well, he knows as much as the brothers, but he's a lot less conservative about helping. He also seems to have a soft spot for Jace, so if we convince him were doing this for him then Zachariah will be that much more inclined to help us."

It wasn't a great plan, but it was the best they had.

"How do you know this?" Izzy asked her brother.

"I was talking to Tessa Gray at Luke and Jocelyn's wedding. It just came up," he said.

"I have Tessa's number," added Clary. "We've kept in contact."

Izzy's face did the closest thing it could to a smile, given the circumstances. "We can ask her to help too. She's a pretty powerful and knowledgeable warlock herself." she suggested.

The other three watched as Clary dialled Tessa's number, and arrangements were made to meet at the Institute with Zachariah two days later.

What they didn't know was how much could happen in two days.
