"Zachariah's service is today in Idris," Izzy said, a few days later. She had been wearing white mourning clothes ever since his passing.
"When is it, exactly? I can portal us there," Clary offered. Her latest theory about why she could use the runes was causing her to practice them more and more often.
When the time came, Clary drew the rune with her stele and watched everyone go through the portal before her, a mass of white clothes. She still had trouble with white at funerals due to her mundane upbringing; to her, it bordered on disrespect, even joy at someone's passing.
The service was held on a grassy valley near Brocelind Forest. Shadowhunters were there of course, but there were many Silent Brothers attending as well. Even Tessa, a warlock, had received permission from the Clave to come into Idris for the occasion.
Magnus could be seen standing next to Tessa, comforting her. It didn't seem particularly surprising that they should know each other, both being fairly prominent figures in the downworlder community, however Clary and Izzy both tried to stop Alec seeing.
The Consul put her hands up for silence, and any talking ceased immediately. The proceedings began like any other Shadowhunter funeral, but elements of a silent brother funeral were soon recognizable too.
Clary looked around at the crowd, searching for someone. She didn't know who she expected to find, but she saw Jace, just for a second, almost as if he was a spirit. He was camouflaged, white on white, on the other side of the valley. They made eye contact for but a split second, then he was gone, as if he had never been there.
She called out for him, almost silently so as not to disturb the proceedings, but his name died on her lips, falling again and leaving behind the burning taste of stomach acid in her throat.
Izzy heard her, and gave her a hug. Clary leaned gratefully into the embrace, glad to have found a friend underneath the stilettos and perfectly plucked eyebrows. Although Izzy had missed what had just happened, she was there for her, unquestioning. She was becoming as good a friend to her as Simon, Clary realized.
Suddenly, she caught another glimpse of Jace, quickly making his way towards the forest.
Without another word, she set after him at a run, muttering "excuse me" and "sorry" as she wove her way through the white-clad mourners.
A few people stared disapprovingly after her, but she paid them no heed, fixed as she was on the quickly retreating figure on the edge of the forest.
Under the cover of the dense trees, Clary was afraid she had lost him. Then, he appeared suddenly, a flash of white, not too far away. Panting, she hastily applied speed and stamina runes to her body, and redoubled her pace.
She ran faster and faster; faster than she would have thought possible. She skidded to a stop beside Jace when she caught him, or at least she tried to. Her feet had other ideas, however, and she had soon passed Jace altogether.
She looked over her shoulder at him, a cry for help escaping her lips.
"I can't stop" she shouted.
Silently and very quickly, he took off after her. Neither of them knew what was happening, or even what Jace would do to help if he caught up with her.
They were both sprinting side by side.
"What's happening?" Jace gasped.
"I don't know. I saw you at the service and I followed you here. I was getting tired so I put on some marks to help me keep going," Clary explained between breaths.
"Shit." Jace said in reply. "You have to disfigure the marks."
"How do I do that when I'm moving?" She asked, still breathing heavily.
"Give me you stele." He demanded.
Clary complied, and he took her arm and drew a line through the offending rune, leaving a searing sting in its wake.
She finally stopped running, doubling over.
"What was that about?" She asked him.
