"I did it! I can control my ability!" Keefe felt like doing a victory dance. After everything he had been through this felt like a major accomplishment.

Jolie smiled, "I knew you could do it. And this proves two things. One, my theory is correct and two, you're more powerful than I realized. As Empaths, people always think we're not talented enough because all we can do is see how people feel. But that's not true. It's really hard to be an Empath-you probably already knew that after looking at Vespera- but it's easy to get swept away. Empaths need to be mentally strong to handle feelings and you are the strongest Empath I know."

Keefe wiped away the tears that were forming in his eyes.

"Thank you for saying that about me. I don't think I would have ever learned to control my ability without you."

They both stood in silence for a second.

"Well because I can control my ability now I can go, right? I won't hurt anyone!" Keefe said happily. Until he saw the pity in Jolie's eyes.

"Actually you can't, Keefe. It's too dangerous. Just because you can stop your commands from coming out doesn't mean you can control everything. And also, I can't run the risk of you slipping and telling anyone who I actually am."

Keefe's heart stilled. "You can't do that to me. I can control my ability! You have no idea what happened to me! I know this isn't just about that though. You're just being selfish because you don't want anyone to know who you are!" He finally gritted out.

Jolie closed her eyes and softly said, "I'm not being selfish Keefe. You have no idea how much it pains me to not tell my parents. Everything would unravel if I did. All my hard work."

"Ok, then I won't tell anyone! I made a promise okay! I have to go!" Keefe was so angry she wouldn't just understand what Keefe had to do. Fine, he wouldn't tell anyone, but he had to go.

For her.

She was all that mattered.

Even if she would never love him, he didn't care.

He would go back just to be with her again.

And before Jolie even realized what he was doing, he pulled out the hidden crystal from his coat pocket and held it up to the light.

"Don't you dare..." Jolie yelled when she saw the crystal. She lunged and just before she grabbed onto him, Keefe yelled, "Sleep!"

Jolie immediately collapsed in a tangle of limbs but Keefe knew because of the ability resistors on her wrists she would wake soon.

Sure enough, In a split second Jolie started stirring, groping around with her eyes closed.

Keefe closed his own and muttered three words that had never made a difference.

But that didn't mean that he wouldn't try.

"I'm so sorry."

Slowly, he stepped into the beam and let the cool glow carry him away.

As Keefe whirled around in the silvery light he thought of all the mistakes that he had made.

This was different.

Keefe knew... knew that Jolie would hate him forever for doing this but he had to.

It was his only chance.
