Piper, Layla, Emily, Claire and I met early at the CIA base and together we are currently sitting at one of the conference tables. After Piper sent us a message, I left right away.

For at least three hours we watched Piper try to hack into the flash drives, but so far without success. But we can't give up yet. Every word Piper spoke seemed to me like a completely different language. The last thing she muttered to herself was that some codes are hard to decipher.

I looked over her shoulder, but all the green numbers and words were giving me a headache by now.

Even when Piper had deciphered one code, the others were secured differently again. She suspects that after these codes, there are probably other security measures that she will have to crack.

"It's not working." whispered Piper after some time.

"What do you mean?" I asked completely upset and stared at Piper stunned. During the night I slept very little and woke up constantly, so my mood is accordingly bad. The locked data thing hadn't left me alone and the fear that the guys would make it out before we unlocked the USBs didn't make it any easier for me to sleep.

"Yes, can you repeat that?" asked Layla now also perplexed and formed shells around her ears with her palms, to signale that she didn't understand it.

Yet we had understood Piper perfectly. We just didn't want to believe it.

"I still don't have access to the data and I don't think I ever will," Piper repeated her statement.

"You're kidding, right?" I asked again, it must be a joke otherwise I don't know what the future holds for the CIA. But Piper just shook her head and her expression showed that she didn't feel like joking at this important moment.
"Fuck," Layla cursed, "I was really hoping you were joking."

That's what I was hoping, too. What a load of bullshit news.

At least it was a good decision to let Claire and Emily in on the truth, because five heads are always better than three. Even though their involvement so far hasn't really been helpful today. Both sat speechless in the corner, all the information still a bit too much for the two of them.
