Tay's POV
"C'mon. Stop draggin ass." I call out to Josh.
'What a pussy. He's been bitching about not finishing his sleeve. I thought it would be nice if we got tatted together. Even told him it was my treat and he's still bitching and moaning.'
"Alright, alright. Here I come."
"Why are you acting so scared?"
"I'm afraid of the needle. I can't get tatted without being high." Josh confesses as we post up in the alley next to Skud's Row.
"Who said we had to be sober?" I say as flip open the Altoids case. Josh matches me and we smoke three jays back to back to back. Feeling lifted, we enter Skud's Row. Skud's Row looks more like a sketchy basement of your best friend's older brother where you receive trash and infected tats. Skud says he likes the luck; it reminds him of his first tat. The windows have bars for no apparent reason. Everyone knows Skud and know he's not one to be trifled with. A small glass top table separates the lobby from the actual tattoo stations. There are six artists working at Skud's and all of them are family members of Skud. The front desk is worked by his baby sister who has an array of piercings on her face. The parlor offers tattoos, cover ups, and most piercings.
Tracy greets us. Well mostly Josh.
"Hey Trace. Leroy and Charley are expecting us." I say as we walk to the back. Josh goes to Leroy's chair and I to Charley's. Ain't no love lost between me and Charley. We used to fuck around but it started to feel too much like a relationship. Words were callously thrown back and forth. Now, we only see each other for business. Charley's not classically beautiful but she's not ugly. Her eyes are startling; one is blue and the other is blue and green like separately. Her nose is crooked from being broken so many times from playing lacrosse. Her head is shaved so close that I can't tell the color. She's built and gives all new meaning to the term "butch".
"Hey stranger." Charley grunts.
"Long time no see."
"What are we doin today?"
"Getting my Misfit tat filled in. Thinking of adding some kind of symbol after it."
"Sounds good. Take off shirt and sit up."Charley commands. On the other side of me, Leroy and Josh joke like long lost friends.
'Figures. Next time I'll remember not to shit where I eat.'
Charley presses harder than necessary with the needle. I twitch every now and then only to be scolded by the big butch. It doesn't take much time to shade; it's only letters after all. In the end, I have her freehand a mini hand giving a one finger salute with the thumb kickstand. The tat stretches across my left inner arm from upper arm to elbow joint.
"Thanks, Charls. It looks fucking raw." I dap up Charley and stare at my arm in the mirror.
'I don't think my bicep ever looked so good!'
"Hey Trace. Could stop fawning over Josh long enough to pierce my tragus and one other cartilage piercing?" I tease Tracey. She stomps over slaps the back of my head. The whole shop roars into laughter. Skud comes out the back to see the fuss.
"What's the hollerin for?"
"Tay's smart mouth got her a slap from Trace." Charley gleefully says. Skud joins in the chuckling. I've never heard Skud chuckle before. It's shockingly effeminate for a short, stocky ex-biker. Skud's long brown hair has only started to gray at the temples. His motorcycle boots thud as he sits in the chair near the piercing station.
"I toldja one of these days your jokes well land you in trouble, Reilly. Trace, try not to take it out on her poor ear." Skud says as the room raors into laughter once more. Trace, not so gently, covers my tat. She then disinfects my right ear to get ready for the piercings. For the cartilage piercing, she marks a spot on my ear next to the other two I already have.
