Ren's POV
"You're on your way? Great. Wouldn't want to make the Reillys mad." I kid on the phone with Tay. Since we talked this morning, I've been feeling a little better.
'I have to find a way to finish the bet. Genuine feelings are coming into play and I feel like carrying on like this will make things end badly. Maybe I should try to talk to Ann about canceling and I could still keep my car.'
Speaking of the Devil, Ann comes in when I'm putting on the finishing touches on my make-up.
"Hey. Where're you going lookin all Amish?"
'I wouldn't say Amish. The skirt is a respectful length and my blouse is simple. I'm more worried about how Tay will be dressed.'
"Church with the Reillys."
"That's hilarious. Where you actually going? Was there an event for Frou's class?"
"No, I'm serious." A knock on the door interrupts our conversation. Ann crosses the room and opens the door.
"Oh my G-d! Please tell me you're going to church like that." Ann screeches from the door. My hand slips causing me to spray perfume in my mouth when Tay steps into view. I start coughing and gagging. Ann cackles on as Tay gets me a bottle water. Tears steam down my face nearly ruining the make-up I painstakingly applied.
"Why?" I croak out worryingly.
"It feels right." Tay answers. Tay is wearing a red sleeveless shirt that has nearly every synonym for vagina on, baggy board shorts, and ratty flip flops. On her head sits a Kangol hat.
"We're screwed. You're parents are gonna think this is my fault." I wince from imagining the Reillys reaction.
"How? You're dressed properly. Stop being a worrywart and get in the car." Tay says. She pushes me out the door past an amused Ann. When we get to the car, I see that's it's far worse than I expected. There's an obnoxious Hawaiian print button down shirt hanging off of the driver seat.
"No no no." I moan feeling a migraine coming on.
"I know, right? It's the icing on the shit cake."
'Tay's getting such a kick out of this. Her eyes are lit up like a kid in a toy store. I hope it's worth it because I would not want the ire of the Reillys on me. What's Mama Barnes gonna think?'
"What time is the service and how long does it run?"
"It started twenty minutes ago. I'm not sure when it ends."
"We're already late?!"
"Calm down! You're gonna stroke out if you carry on like that. Everything will be fine. Just trust me." Tay says grabbing my hand.
'Oh boy. After the disaster of a morning, it figures the day would end up like this.'
Tay's POV
I swing into the church parking lot bypassing many open spots to park in the loop in front of the church doors.
"Really?" Ren asks annoyed. I just nod and help her out the car.
'If I timed it right, we'll be walking in during the announcements part so we won't disrupt the service too much. I'm callous not heartless.'
I open the creaky heavy doors and escort Ren inside. The whole congregation watches us walk up the center aisle to the front pews. I mutter a couple of "pardons" and "excuse us" so that we're seated by the Reillys. This time Ren sits on the end furthest away from Celeste and Pearce.
"Mornin, Celeste. Pearce." I whisper. I can almost see the steam shooting out of Celeste's ears. Pearce grits his teeth and nods in my direction. The minister prattles on about everything under the sun. Finally, the Reillys take center stage.
'I wonder if his ass is jealous of the shit that flows out his mouth. Not the quality but the sheer volume. It's astounding. I would be suckered like the rest of the idiots but I actually know him.'
Pearce steps down from the pulpit with shit eating grin. The rest of the service goes by fast and furious. At the end of the service, the majority of the congregation leaves.
'Only the ass kissers remain. Speaking of, here comes Dean Lawrence and family. Poor Ian straggles in the back shooting me a lazy look. Just when I thought to day could not get any better. It does.'
"Morning, Minister Powell. What a moving service. My eyes are my open then they have ever been." Dean gushes. His parents smile proudly while Ian rolls his eyes and mouths "kiss ass" to me.
"Good morning and you're welcome. Dean is a pillar in society. A model upon all young men should wish to emulate. You must be proud, David and June." Minister Powell boasts. The adults break off leaving us alone. Dean wastes no time shedding his charming choir boy facade.
"What the hell are you wearing? Is that a team uniform?" Dean taunts slapping Ian's shoulder.
"Nah, this is only for MVPs. How rude of you not to introduce your more handsome and damn smarter brother."
"He wishes. Ren, this is my brother Ian. Baby brother, this is the most beautiful and confused girl Ren." Ian nods politely.
"Nice to meet you." Ren says reaching out to Ian. He hesitantly shakes her hand while gauging my reaction. I tuck Ren under my arm.
"Ian's not too bad. It's a miracle considering that Dean is a misogynistic piece of shit." I faux whisper to Ren causing her and Ian to snort.
"I've had enough of you. If you weren't a girl, I'd kick your ass."
"Lucky for me, I have no problem with kicking your ass. It's light work." I tease bumping chests with Dean. Unfortunately, the parents come back and we have to fake niceties.
"Great seeing you again, Mr and Mrs Reilly. I'll see you to later. Have a blessed day." Dean gushes as we walks away with his parents.
'Argghhhhhh. It's going to be so satisfying whuppin his ass. I can already taste victory.'
"Onwards to lunch. My treat." I say as we load up in out cars. Pearce leads the way in my BMW.
'I can't believe the rotten fucker is driving my car! He doesn't even like Beemers. Looks like I'm in for another fight. Why does everyone fuck with the lion?'
I growl audibly as my patience weans away. Ren reaches across the console and rubs my forearm. I calm down just a fraction of the amount by the time we arrive at some expensive brunch restaurant. Celeste starts on her soapbox as soon as we sit.
"Must you always be an embarrassment? I mean, what in the Hell are you wearing?"
"In proper order, yes and my Sunday causal." The waitress comes over and takes our orders.
'I can't wait for this day to end.'
Ren's POV
'Thank G-d the world's most uncomfortable brunch has ended. It just makes me feel worse about the whole bet thing.'
"Thanks for coming with me today. Sorry bout the whole brunch. At least the food was good. Conpany could have been better." Tay apologizes.
"No worries. I've had worse." I lie. Tay walks me to my dorm.
"Come by Han's tonight. We can finish watching the movies and work on the project."
"Sure. Should I bring a bag?"
"Definitely." Tay smirks. She pushes me against the door and kisses the sanity out of me. My knees droop as she releases me.
"Laters." She says turning to leave.
'Yup. Definitely need to call somebody.'
