ROCINHA
APARTMENT
KARMA
Caramel eyes stared at the midnight sky, so full of hope and loneliness, her cheek smooshed against her close fist as she stargazed. Ears drowning all the background noise as she sat in front of the small apartment window, the chilly air filtering inside the apartment, freshening up the ambiance. Praga sat at the dining table, she was going through her monthly expenses, taking into account how much they have saved since her 2016 resolution was to buy a house for all of them. Gavin laid down on the wide couch, his emerald eyes were trained on the TV screen as he watched a replayed of a soccer game.
Everybody seemed off in their own little world. Karma was having a conversation with a ghost in her head, in the stars, she pictured her mother's face, she imagined Martina smiling down on her, filling the teenager with warmth. As she stared at the sky she noticed something flying upwards, leaving a trail of light as it shot into the sky, Karma frowned for a second before that small dot of light exploded into something bigger and brighter. Fireworks. The loud boom startled Praga, Karma chuckled and turned around, shooting the woman a smirk as she heard her curse in Portuguese.
Another reason why Karma was feeling melancholic is the fact that it's December, a month filled with presents, Jesus' birthday (because she does believe in that guy), delicious leftovers, and last but not least, family gatherings. Karma loved her small family, she wouldn't trade them for the world and she feels complete with them... but she can't stop thinking about what it would feel like to have a father. She would always watch her friends greet their parents, the smile in which they are received followed by the tender kiss on the cheek and the "How was your day?"
She feels ungrateful whenever she thinks like that, Karma is very aware of just how much Praga had to sacrifice to keep her in school just so she could have a better future than her. She is so very grateful for her, she knows Praga is doing her best, Karma loves her big heart and natural instinct to always help those in need. But at the end of the day, she's only human, and humans are greedy. They could have everything, but there's always something more, something bigger, something better that they must have.
