GAVIN
"Gavin? O que você está fazendo aqui, pequenininho?" Gavin? What are you doing up here little one?
The door made a groaning sound as it closed, his ears caught up the soft padding of her footsteps as she approached him. The fourteen-year-old kid sat on the very edge of the roof, one leg pulled into his chest and the other dangled over the edge, his emerald eyes skimming over the penurious landscape of La Favelas. But even though the place was broken and on the verge of falling apart, Gavin couldn't help but find beauty in its imperfection.
There was something so comforting about it, the place told him that it was okay to be broken and that being broken didn't mean he was a ruin. Even though the place was filled with poverty and violence, there was also happiness in it, Gavin witnessed it first hand when he was on the streets. His favorite part of the day was the night, he would watch from afar as seniors would sit outside their shops and have a friendly conversation with their neighbors.
He would also watch kids play, dance, and just live happily. They didn't care if they had no shoes or were dressed in rags, they were young and their hearts pure, oh how he wishes he was like that again. So what did he learn? He learned that happiness was everywhere, in the details of a nicely decorated birthday card, in a song, on someone's laugh, happiness wasn't some hidden treasure that could only be found with a map. Happiness is like music, you only have to tune in to be able to experience it. But one question still remains: was he worthy of it?
Praga exhaled as she came to a stop beside him, her arms braided over her chest, green hair tied into a messy bun. "Whatever is going through your mind, it won't always be like this."
Gavin chuckled, but the laugh was dull, laced with dark humor. "I'm not trying to kill myself. I came up here to think."
Praga chuckled, looking over at the city. "Good to know." She mumbled beside him, a heartbeat went by before she asked him another question. "Are you thinking about your family? Your mom?"
