Beastboy's final words gave Damien a chill down his spine. He was deep lol in thought when the door opened to see the muse of his mind standing in front of him.
"How are you?" Nightwing asked quietly, almost whispering. He was sitting in the stool next to him in a black tshirt and light jeans with no mask on. It was an unusual sight to see, but then the dark circles under his blue eyes caught Damien's attention to the point of forgetting to answer. "Still mad at me for the IV?" He asked concerned, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh-no!" Damien snapped out of his trans. "I was zoning out a little thinking about what I'm hungry for, but I'm great! How are you?" Damien quickly came up with a lie. Nightwing started to gently remove his IV and sighed.
"That's actually why I'm here..." Nightwing started and Damien knew it wasn't hunger. "You remember I had younger siblings that were adopted out to a family, right?" Damien nodded silently as Nightwing gently pulled the IV needle from the back of his hand. He pressed the taped gauze down and inhaled sharply to continue speaking. "Well, they died two days ago. I'm going to their house to spend a few days with their family for the funeral." Nightwing said flatly as he sat back down. His face looked numb and had no emotion left in it tonight. Damien could tell this was bothering him, but it had also worn him out already.
"Dick, I'm sorry..." Damien started as he sat up. He knew he had been keeping in contact with them religiously. Without an answer, Nightwing looked down at the floor in between the stool and the bed, briefly zoning out. "How are you doing with this?" Damien whispered.
"Not great." Nightwing whispered numbly without looking up. It caught Damien off guard how nonchalant he admitted it without changing his face.
"Do you need help?" Damien asked, with a twinge of worry in his voice. It reminded Nightwing of when they were much younger.
"No-No, I'll be alright!" Nightwing snapped back to his reality when he heard the worry. He instantly felt guilty for saying anything. He got up from the stool and looked Damien in his eyes. For the first time, his expression looked forced as he grinned. "You just focus on getting better, okay?" Nightwing nudged his shoulder like he always did growing up. Damien nodded but internally felt his heart sink and his lack of emotional availability. "You promise you'll be okay while I'm gone?" Nightwing said sternly to which Damien shook his head and held out his pinky finger to pinky swear. Nightwing grabbed it with his pinky before turning to leave.
"Dick!" Damien called out right before he hit the door. He stopped without turning. "You can tell me if you're not alright and need help..." Damien spoke out with a small shake to his voice. Nightwing never turned to face him but Damien saw his shoulders tense at the comment.
"Thanks." Nightwing muttered before leaving the room.
Cyborg had agree to drop an undercover Nightwing at the train station and was waiting in the garage by an unmarked, tinted windowed, black car. Nightwing came down with Sunglasses on and a rolling suitcase behind him. Cyborg took a mental note of the puffiness of his eyes that his electronic eye could see through his sunglasses. Nightwing got in and tried to stifle a sniffle as quietly as possible. Cyborg knew him well enough to leave it alone. As he turned on the car, Cyborg turned the radio to a classic rock station that Nightwing liked and drove into the tunnel under the Bay Area to get to the city.
They got to the train station and Nightwing sighed as he opened the door. He grabbed his suitcase from the back seat and looked back into the cabin of the car at Cyborg. "Thanks man. You have no idea..." Nightwing trailed off before he let his emotions get to him again.
"Yo, not a problem!" Cyborg stated. "Let us know when you get there." Cyborg said and received a nod before he turned to walk towards the train depot.
Raven was working on a spell book. She felt a little overwhelmed with Nightwing's mind link today with the grief he was feeling. She meant to go talk to him before he left but he left sooner than she had expected. She was a little confused because their mind link had been hazy lately but today it was clear as day.
Starfire sat on Nightwing's bed with an uneasy feeling surrounding her. Something wasn't right about his announcement to the team about his sibling's death. Reminiscing, she mentally visualized his disheveled hair and the bluntness in his announcement. The Nightwing she knew had emotions and he lived by those passionately. How was he able to drop that announcement on them and leave?
