She took a long drag from her cigarette. She waited in silence as the mill grew more and more silent in what seemed like a never ending void. She took another puff, letting the smokey air captivate her lungs. She watched the scorching sun slowly rise from behind the backdrop of a black sea of night. Her eyes fell on the raging chaos of the world around her, she wanted to be dead.

Her fingers touched the bud of the cigarette and brought it to her lips, she inhaled.

"You smoke?" He asked, he seemed so unsure of the word.

"No." She shook her head. "But I do now I suppose."

He sat beside her, watching the awakening horror.

"If you smoke once, it doesn't mean you are a smoker."

"So if you kill once, you aren't a killer?"

She looked at him, a ghost of a smile forming on her face. "Well played Newt."

He nodded in agreement. "I know."

"Is everyone else asleep?" She asked, inhaling another painful breath of smoke.

"Stevenson doesn't know what the word 'sleep' is, he's been up since you've been up, working on that truck in the shed." Newt referred to a small, worn down truck behind the mill. "Joesy and Radar are still out though."

"Josey." Jett said sharply under her breath so Newt couldn't hear the venom.

A soft silence surrounded them once again.

"To Denver?" Jett asked.

"To Denver."

Jett say up and helped Newt to his feet and they began to walk inside. Jett felt the hot sun scorching up her back. They walked inside and Stevenson welcomed them with a grin, before going back to searching for a toolbox.

"How did you find them?" Newt asked Jett, pointing at the pack of cigarettes in her hand.

"Just did." She shrugged.

Some footsteps from downstairs took them by surprise when Radar and and Josephine came wiring into the room.

"Hey guys, how was-" Jett tried to speak but Josephine covered her mouth, bringing her down to the ground.

"What are you doing?" Newt snapped.

"Shut it kid." Josephine snapped.

Newt did as told.

"Cranks outside, about ten of them. I think they have a leader of the sort." Josephine hissed. "Tall, white scrawny girl with a brunette rats nest."

Radar quickly took off to find Stevenson, who went back to his truck.

"What do we do?" Newt asked.

Jett mumbled words, clawing at the hand around her mouth.

"Ouch!" Josephine snarled. "Stop being such a drama queen Jett and maybe do what I say for once."

They crawled towards a closet, opening it slowly so it would be quiet. Radar and Stevenson returned, keeping a gun loaded. They huddled into the closet and closed it. Holding there breaths every so often so no one could hear the terrified gasps.

The front door of the mill creaked open.

"Find anything we can use." It was a girls voice.

Jett bit her lip.

"Someone's been here." Another girls voice.

"What?"

"Recently too."

The girl, the leader maybe started pacing back and forth. Stress was written all over her face.

Radar hiccuped.

The girl whipped her head around to the closet. "Keep the weapons at the door, don't fire unless they fire." Her voice was light, Jett wondered how on earth she could be a leader. The doorknob twisted and the closet was opened.

Newt's jaw hit hell by the time it finished dropping.

"Newt?"
