It was true. The electrical storms did grow worse every time. The storm Newt was in wasn't half as bad as the shrieking wind and blinding light every few seconds. The whole cabin shook and rattled every time thunder boomed and echoed. It didn't bother Newt nor did it bother any of the others in his room.
Jett, Gina and Todd all read in the dim light of the candles, while Kyle and Chrissy played checkers on the floor. Radar was sound asleep on his bunk, while Newt watched Jett flip the pages to her book.
He liked the way she smiled at the book sometimes or frowned sourly at the words. He liked the way she had so much emotion with one little piece of worded paper.
Knocking at the door. "Can I come in?"
"I think it's Kels." Gina spoke up.
"Come in." Jett called, not looking away from her book.
A little girl, about seven or eight walked in, eyes red from crying.
"Kelsey what's wrong?" Jett placed her book down and walked up to the little girl.
"The thunder is scaring me." The little girl told Jett.
Jett frowned. "It'll be over before you know it."
"I can't sleep anymore." The little girl began to sob. "I don't like the sound."
"Radar?" Jett called but he didn't budge from his sleep. "Bloody hell someone wake him up!"
Newt shook Radar gently but he rubbed it off and put a pillow over his ear.
"Can someone grab Cali for me?" Jett asked all around.
Newt raised his hand. "I'll grab her."
Jett nodded and watched as Newt exited the room, on a mission to find Cali.
Bluntly, Jett tried to soothe her sisters cries. "Come on Kels, it's just a little rain."
"Make it stop!" She cried, finally waking Radar who looked fretful.
"I can't." Jett hugged her, patting her back.
"Come on Kels." Gina sat beside Jett and Kelsey now. "Think about all the puddles you can jump in tomorrow morning."
That only made Kelsey cry harder.
Cali and Newt came back, Cali had a worried expression painted on her face.
"Come on Kelsey, let's go read a bed time story." Cali was exceptionally good with kids and in a time when all of them became orphans, she was really well-needed.
"Okay." Kelsey rubbed her eyes. "Night night."
"Night Kelsey." Jett kissed her sisters cheek.
"Night Newt." Kelsey waved to Newt who was surprised she knew who he was.
"Goodnight." He said, the words feeling odd on his tongue.
Newt had been at the cabin for only a day and he already felt like he knew how everything worked. Nobody minded there own business, everyone worked as a society to keep everything happy and easy going. The Gladers told shucky shanks to suck it up, Newt noticed people comforting others. He liked that.
"That was your sister?" He asked Jett, finally saying something to her.
"Yeah." She nodded.
"Is Stevenson your dad?" Newt questioned. "What about Cali? Is she your mom?"
Jett sighed but then stifled a laugh. "Oh no, Stevenson found Kelsey and I at the beginning of this mess. Cali was someone we recruited and she clicked right away with my sister."
"I just assumed, my fault." Newt apologized.
"All good." Jett said, turning her attention back to her book.
"Good that."
