Jett didn't remember falling asleep. She didn't remember being engulfed into a deep, comfortable sleep or tuning out the killer sounds of the storm outside. She had never slept in either. She looked around the empty room before noticing the opened curtains. She got up to look outside, everyone was doing what they usually did around this time in the morning.
Then she thought of Newt, what could he possibly be doing right now? She jogged down the hallway of the cabin and went down the stairs, only to see Kelsey, another kid by the name of Jackson and Newt doing the dishes to this mornings breakfast.
"Morning." Kelsey called from the pail of water she held over the sink.
"You guys are like pioneers, no running water at all." Newt said. "You fetch the water yourselves?"
"Dreadful isn't it?" Jett yawned.
"No kidding." Newt laughed awkwardly, as if he was recalling a memory.
Stevenson walked into the house, holding another jug of water from the stream. "Morning Jett!"
"Hey." She acknowledged him before yawning again. "Why was I allowed to sleep in?"
"You needed a good sleep." He smiled at her. "You've been working your butt off lately since I've been gone."
Jett awed.
Jackson and Kelsey finished up the dishes and took off to find the other kids running around the area.
"So." Newt finally said. "Am I one of you now or do I leave?"
Stevenson chuckled. "Newt you sound like we are going to banish you or something."
Newt stepped back slightly and Jett looked up concerned. "You alright?"
"Yeah." He shook his head. "Just a little bloody traumatized."
Jett felt his pain. Everyone had gone through this traumatizing state of life, it was awful. Sometimes Jett had wished she was never born so she didn't have to experience the terrible things she'd been in.
"Ready to run the forest again?" Stevenson asked Jett and Newt fell backwards, landing on his hands.
Jett immediately leant down beside him. "What happened?"
"I just-" Newt's words got stuck in his throat.
Stevenson handed Jett a bottle of water and she gave it to Newt. "Do you want to lie down?"
Newt wanted to say no and show how tough he was but he nodded and was walked up to the room he shared by a shucking girl.
"It's blazing out." Jett laughed. "You must have heat stroke."
"I must." Newt nodded.
"I better get going, it's my turn to watch around the forest peak, make sure no cranks get in." Jett said.
Newt desperately wanted her to say but she had a job to do. He waved to her as she closed the door behind her and he kept his gaze on the wooden ceiling. He hadn't had a crazy spasm all day yesterday and had a peaceful sleep. Wasn't he a crank? Wasn't he not immune?
