Newt felt nervous as he walked into the room of six teenagers, all looking at him with weary eyes. They all had the same terrified expression on there faces.
"Stop looking so damn terrified all the time." Jett groaned and flopped on a bottom bunk. "That's Newt, pretty sure he's a good guy so far."
They all said nothing. Newt couldn't believe his ears when he heard silent. The friends he knew would of talked up a storm, just like the one brewing outside.
"He can have the top bunk of my bed." Jett said. "Newt, that's Gina, Chrissy, Todd, Kyle and you already know Radar."
"Hello." He said shyly.
Shyly? Newt was never shy. He felt completely out of character.
"Do you know what's for dinner Jett?" Finally someone spoke other then Jett or himself, it was Chrissy.
"I'm hoping warm tomato soup." Jett then added. "With some crackers Stevenson said he found."
Someone knocked on the door then opened it, it was Sid. "Sorry to bother y'all but I need to take a head count, just shout here when I say your name."
"Chrissy?"
"Here."
"Gina?"
"Right here."
"Todd?"
"Yup!"
"Radar."
"I'm always here Sid."
"Kyle?"
"Yes."
"Jett?"
"Mhmm."
"And Newt?"
"Uh, yeah."
"Thanks guys, dinner should be up in a bit, I'd light a few candles now, it's getting dark real fast." Sid exited the room.
Jett walked toward the same drawer she got Newt's clothes from and picked out five candles and lit them each with a match. "Spooky stories anyone?"
"This isn't a damn camp Jett." Gina laughed. "We ain't got no time for stories."
The room chuckled.
"Fine then, let's sit in silence and scare the crap out of Newt even more." Radar climbed to the top of his bunk, shared with Kyle.
"I'm not scared." Newt found himself saying.
"That's crazy." Chrissy remarked.
Newt shook his head and tuned out the other voices talking to him. He'd been through way worse. The maze, the trials, watching Chuckie die, finding out he wasn't immune, realizing that he'd never see his friends again. This didn't scare him. A bunch of friendly shanks living in kumbaya.
"Newt?" Newt noticed Jett move closer to him. "You okay?"
Newt hadn't noticed the bowl of soup in front of him with three crackers stacked in the middle.
"I zoned out I guess." He took a spoonful of the slightly warm soup.
"It's been like ten minutes." Jett laughed. "How could you zone out for that long?"
Thunder shook the house again.
"Just bloody thinking I guess."
"Thinking is good." Jett nodded.
"Good that."
"We won't hurt you you know that right? We won't question your pass, this is a new start Newt." Jett told him. "Finding new people is a blessing, knowing we aren't the only ones left."
"What do you do if someone becomes a crank?" Newt cautiously asked.
"We watch them closely, once they finally try something, we drive them out into the city with food and a weapon." Jett explained. "Why?"
"Just asking." He mumbled.
"Eat up, it's going to be a long night."
