Graduating was weird. All these years of studying, sleepless nights, endless amounts of coffee; it all ended in a couple of last exams, a few celebrations, and congratulations from people Camila loved as well as people she had barely talked to in the last years.
The first day she woke up without any pressure from upcoming exams was even weirder. She spent two hours in bed, doing nothing until she finally stood up and looked for something to occupy her.
While she and Sally still hadn't talked about her soon departure, the closer the day came, the more time they spent together. Sally made a great effort to find time for her despite her challenging and time-consuming job and Camila conveniently had nothing else to do. She loved the evenings in which Sally would type into her laptop and she would lay next to her with a book, smiling whenever Sally's hand brushed hers or she received a kiss.
However, as she slowly began to move things she knew she wouldn't need in the near future into her suitcase or cancelled her library card, ignoring suddenly seemed very hard. Every time she saw Sally and mentioned noting, the knot in her stomach became a little tighter.
Together with Aki, Camila hosted a little party, both their graduations as occasion. As she decided to simultaneously use it as an early farewell party, ignoring her departure suddenly seemed even harder.
Aki had lived in Brighton his entire life which meant that most of his friends were able to attend the party and Camila decided to invite pretty much everyone she had met in the last 6 months. Their apartment was quite nice and big, at least considering they were broke students, but that day, it was hopelessly overcrowded with both their guests.
Camila attempted to clink glasses with everyone and, what turned out to be quite problematic, she succeeded. Her habit to become overwhelmed by tiredness every time she had a certain amount of alcohol in her body was one she had forgotten to consider.
Sally, who had mainly conversed with Jake and Aki during the celebration in order to allow Camila to say goodbye to everyone she might never see again, eventually had to keep her from falling asleep on the couch against a fellow student's shoulder and led her to her room.
Camila was at the level of drunkenness that she had lost every filter but in the back of her mind, she was aware that she really should shut the fuck up. "You're so pretty," she blabbered as Sally tried to lead her to her bed. "So fucking pretty."
Sally sighed. "I never am the sober person. I guess I owe Jake some apologies."
Camila then began to giggle. She ignored the last sentence as she had more important things to state. "And you wanted to date me."
Sally guided her to the bed and Camila sat down. "Emphasis on wanted," the blonde mumbled. "You said no."
"And you know why!" Camila suddenly felt the need to move and jumped up from the bed again, making Sally groan. "I didn't think I'd want to date you."
"Thank you, that's lovely to hear," Sally commented drily. "Makes me feel so much better."
Resolutely but carefully, she grabbed Camila's shoulders and sat her down again.
"But I want now," she mumbled. Her eyes were so heavy and her body exhausted so Camila laid down. Like a kid's doll when put into a horizontal position, her eyes fluttered close the second her back hit the mattress. "And we kinda are. Almost. We had dinner with one candle."
The last thing she heard was before she finally fell asleep was, "To almost have something is worse than never having it at all. What you want is so close, you can imagine how it would be." A gentle kiss was pressed to her forehead. "But in the end, you don't have it. You just almost have it."
