The second her phone made a noise, Camila gladly dropped her pen and sighed before she rubbed her eyes. Any excuse to take a break from studying was welcome.
Camila unlocked her phone and saw a message from Sally. What are your plans for tonight?
She answered immediately. Studying.
Chewing on her lips, she waited for a reply rather anxiously. Sally had been acting distant lately to a point where Camila was concerned.
Booooring
Camila grinned. This was more like her. She put her phone aside to look back at her textbook. Sally was right, this was boring. With another sigh, she decided to just get this over with.
After just 5 minutes, the doorbell was a welcome distraction.
She stretched her body before hurrying to open the door.
"I was just in the area and thought I'd drop by," Sally said cheerfully as a greeting and without any further hesitation, the woman walked past Camila, entering the apartment.
Camila blinked in surprise before she shrugged, closed the door, and turned to Sally. People didn't do this stuff anymore. Meeting up had become a result of endless planning and rescheduling. Spontaneous visits or even phone calls just weren't a thing anymore. Camila considered it a shame. Sally hadn't even done anything yet but just her random appearance made her happy.
"You study too much," Sally said. She walked towards the kitchen and pulled a bottle of wine out of her bag.
"This semester is kinda important," Camila replied. "I'm trying to graduate here."
"Not after 9 pm. Now, drink."
Sally gave her a glass she had just prepared and said, "Cheers."
"I wouldn't have to study till 9 pm if I could stop procrastinating all day," Camila mumbled but obediently raised the glass to her lips and took a sip, relishing in the familiar warmth the alcohol induced.
Sally's glass was already empty when she looked at her. Camila snickered. "You do know this is wine, not vodka?"
"I have another bottle in my bag, we're good." Sally refilled her glass and lied down on the couch.
"Are you okay?" Camila asked carefully as she sat down next to her. "You have been acting weird lately."
Sally hummed and took another sip. "I have?"
"It's been weeks since I learned something about whales so yes."
"I have been just busy with work."
This sentence was the lamest and most obvious excuse Camila could imagine. "Didn't you just tell me I study too much?"
Sally grinned, widely but not genuinely. "Maybe we both do too much. That's why we drink now."
Camila didn't reply. She didn't like being lied to.
"When they sleep," Sally said then, "sperm whales hang vertically in the water with their noses poking out."
Despite herself, Camila had to smile.
"Know what?" Sally refilled her glass for the third time, making Camila raise her eyebrows. That woman could certainly drink. "Jake is on a date tonight."
"That's great. He told me he allowed you to set him up."
Sally nodded and hummed.
"Why does it feel like we are in a fight and Jake has to split himself in two in order to remain friends with both of us?"
