Perfectly on time, Sally arrived at the train station, where she would meet Mila. The place was almost precisely the middle between their apartments and additionally, aside from a supermarket, it was the only place Sally knew how to find.
She didn't have to wait long until she spotted the vaguely familiar face. Whilst the other woman was closing the remaining distance, Sally had the opportunity to study her.
Mila was significantly shorter than her. She was curvy and had black wild curls. Once she was close enough, Sally was able to see the warm, brown eyes behind her huge glasses.
She was beautiful, undoubtedly. There were different kinds of beauty and hers was Sally's favourite. It was natural, subtle, easy to miss for fools. Yet, it was obvious for anyone who took the time to look at her with open eyes for more than a moment.
Her skin, or rather her face as the only thing not covered by her clothes and a ridiculously large scarf, was tanned and filled with freckles.
Her smile was genuine and honest and something, Sally didn't know what exactly it was, but something about her demeanour made her feel comfortable.
Mila hugged her as they exchanged greetings.
"What do you want to see?" Sally asked then.
Mila snickered. "What can you show me?"
Well, she had a point. Sally pulled out her phone and proudly opened Google Maps. "Anything you want," she replied.
Mila surprised her by gently pushing the hand away. "That's cheating. We'll figure it out. Let's go to the ocean."
"I think it's this way," Sally said, pointing down a street.
She received an exasperated sight. Mila took her hand and pulled her in the opposite direction. "I looked at a map, it's literally just down this road."
Sally laughed. It hadn't been a surprise to her that Jake already knew the city much better than she, but it was a tad embarrassing that the person from another country who had been there for not even 24 hours did that too.
Whilst walking, they continued getting to know each other. Mila often made pauses in between words or spoke very slowly due to her English skills. Sally couldn't stop the smiles from spreading whenever she mispronounced something or gestured widely with her hands to try to bring her point across. She was cute.
Sally had already mentioned it to Jake but at that moment she realized again that she would have nothing against this being a date. But like her roommate had said, with her dating behaviour, she shouldn't date anyone she even remotely liked.
Still, Sally enjoyed learning more and more about her. She learned that Mila was studying sustainable design, that she loved sports and nature, and that the reason for her good English skills was her American best friend. That also explained her accent, Sally had wondered about that.
After walking for a little while, they reached the beach. Sally smiled and closed her eyes as she relished in the feeling of the wind and the smell of the water but Mila seemed unimpressed. She giggled, tightened her coat around her body, and pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "You call that a beach? Here isn't even sand."
Sally frowned and crossed her arms. Mila adjusted her black, thick glasses and quickly said, "It's a lovely view."
They walked along the beach for a while until they settled down in one of the countless fish and chips restaurants around.
"What's your biggest fear?" Mila asked after they settled down on a table with their meals.
"I don't know," Sally answered honestly. She raised her eyebrows at the unusual question, thought for a while and said, "I don't like spiders, does that count? You?"
