Friday evening, Sally opened the door for Mila and very eagerly wrapped her arms around her. "Hey," she mumbled into her hair. "I missed you today."
"It has nothing to do with shyness," Jake called from the living room, continuing their discussion. "I just think it's creepy."
"You started this!" Sally loudly called back and smiled when Mila stood on her tiptoes to place a kiss on her lips. "I missed you too."
Sally led Mila to the living room and told Jake, "Personally, I think it's creepier to notice her daily, talk about her and then not to talk to her." To Mila, she said, "What do you think?"
Mila sat down on the couch. With the way her eyes darted back and forth between the roommates, she only needed popcorn to make the image complete. "Is this about the woman from the park again?" she asked.
"Yes. What would we even say?" Jake asked.
Sally opened her mouth.
"The next words out of your mouth better not be whale and fact," he threatened.
She closed her mouth again and sulked. "What do you have against whale facts?" Mila piqued up. "Worked on me."
Sally winked at her and couldn't help the wide grin forming upon Mila's giggles. The sound went straight to her heart. She was so in love with this woman at this moment, it was embarrassing.
Mila was looking particularly beautiful today and Sally made a mental note to tell her that later. She didn't know what it was - she wore jeans and a shirt like most days, her curls were freely dancing around as they usually did - but she didn't want to look away. Somehow Mila could catch her off guard every time she saw her.
Jake coughed and Sally begrudgingly returned her focus to him, trying to remember where they had left off. "I'd be more than happy to provide you with some facts," she offered then.
He rolled his eyes as if she had just hit him with the biggest insult possible. "Oh please. I know dozens."
Sally smirked. "Yeah you do."
Jake let out a sigh so deep, one could think he was carrying all the world's burden on his shoulders. "We can go but no whales."
"You are being unreasonable but it's a deal." Sally turned to Mila. "Are you coming along?"
Mila had just pulled out her phone from her jeans pocket and looked at it with a frown. "I'm getting a call, you guys go without me."
Sally and Jake left the apartment and walked to the staircase. "No otter facts as well," he said. "I know that's your backup."
She shook her head in disappointment. It wasn't fair that he knew her so well. "You're mean today. I'm proud."
Ten minutes later, they returned to their apartment and had to report that the woman had left in the meantime. Mila was in the best of moods and she, when Jake busied himself in the kitchen, told Sally that a friend of hers was planning to spend her vacation in England and wanted to meet up next week.
"I think you two would get along," Mila said. Sally settled down next to her while she spoke. "And her boyfriend is coming. Do you want to join us? They just have one evening in Brighton, I was thinking about showing them the Pier and going to dinner later."
While Mila knew pretty much every person in her life, Sally had only heard a few of her friends' names and had only communicated with one - Lyra. She gladly took the chance of meeting someone in real life. "That means I'm going on a double date." Sally giggled. "If college me could see me..."
