Camila hated flying.

For various reasons, her care for the environment and her fear of heights being the most important ones.

She groaned as another turbulence overcame the plane. This wasn't exactly the calm flight she had hoped for. She pressed her hand to her stomach and fought against nausea rising in her.

The elderly lady in the seat next to her shot a look full of pity and annoyance. Sheepishly, Camila mumbled a "Thank you", when she was passed a barf bag and tried not to take it personally when her neighbour scooted as far away from her as possible.

To her insane relief, the pilot announced a soon landing only a couple of minutes later.

She didn't dare to look outside even when she felt how the plane began to lose height. Shutting her eyes, she latched onto the armrest and only opened her eyes when the plane's wheels touched the ground.

The landing was bumpy and made her groan once again but that surely couldn't the keep the grin on her face from spreading. Not even the raindrops decorating the windows could. It wasn't a surprise. Camila was the kind of person who would drown herself in research about a place before going there and so, she knew that England had more than 150 annual rain days. She was prepared.

Genuine excitement soon replaced the nervousness caused by being more than 30,000 feet up in the air.

After a couple of minutes, she and the other passengers finally were allowed to exit the aeroplane. Camila breathed in relief, knowing she wouldn't have to enter one of these for 6 months.

A cold breeze hit her, making her pull her coat closer to her body and adjusting her backpack.

She could barely keep herself from starting to laugh out loud. Finally, for the first time in her life, she was in another country.

Camila probably should have been nervous about going to a country where she didn't know anyone and in which a different language was spoken, but the giddiness and happiness made it impossible for her to feel that way. She wanted to make experiences and memories, she wanted to see something else in the world.

Impatiently, she passed the airport controls, picked up her luggage, and made her way towards the London Underground.

It didn't take her long to notice that the system was incredibly complicated. She sighed in relief when she finally was on the train that would bring her to Brighton, her new albeit temporary home.

She settled down on a seat by the window and tried to place her luggage in a way that wouldn't keep all the other passengers from walking past her.

"Your sister is bloody brilliant. I think she really has a chance to make it," she heard a female voice not far from her.

Camila smiled and giggled quietly. Back in school, she had been taught the English language by someone growing up in America, most of the movies she watched and songs she listened to were from American artists and even her best friend lived in in the USA. She had heard a lot about it but that was the first time she heard a real British accent.

She looked to find the woman who had spoken. She was sitting only two rows away from her, her face turned to the side so Camila was only able to see a blonde head.

A man was following her, sitting down next to her. "I certainly hope so, she has no other plans."

The woman yawned. "Plans are overrated."

He chuckled and, after a short silence, the pair began to speak again, this time starting a discussion about what to do later and who would have to do some chores. Camila didn't know why, but it had something fascinating to listen to strangers' conversations and make guesses about their lives. She assumed they were either very close friends or a couple.

Their bickering was entertaining. She pulled out her headphones, knowing that listening to music was the only thing that could make her stop eavesdropping for the rest of the ride.

Camila closed her eyes, a smile spreading on her lips as she listened to her favourite playlist. The exhaustion of her journey began to catch up on her as she slowly drifted away.

She woke up in alarm when she someone tapped her shoulder. She flinched heavily, causing her bag to slip down from her lap.

Her phone in her bag tore down her headphones with it. The earplugs were ripped out of her ear and she yelped in pain when they took some of her hair down with them before landing on the floor.

She stared at her belongings for a moment, this was so typical for her.

"Oh good, you're awake."

Camila looked up in surprise. Next to her seat stood the woman she had noticed earlier. She was grinning, not even trying to hide her amusement about her clumsiness. Leaning forward, she asked, "Did you know that the fat layer between the skin and muscle of whales is called blubber?"

Welcome to the book! I'm really excited to start this one. Please consider voting or leaving a comment, it would help me out a lot.

I strongly believe that giving a fact about whales is the best icebreaker out there.
