The next day went by smoothly. Although Midoriya hadn't put down anything for what high school he wanted to go to, he was starting to consider applying for UA.
Consider .
Bakugo's beatings over the past days leading up to the sludge incident didn't get any better - though there was always an emotion in his eyes that Midoriya couldn't quite place. Regret? Sadness? Fear? No, probably not; he was probably just imagining things.
Today, Midoriya had a new fire in his eyes, though. He had a quirk and he felt so strong with that knowledge. But he couldn't let that shine through the personality he had to hold up. He had to be the same useless, weak deku , as always. Otherwise they'd probably beat him up even harder.
Midoriya packed away his things quickly, readying himself to bolt out of that classroom and to the roof before Bakugo got to him.
Maybe he could hide or run from him today. Sounded like a good plan.
" Oi! Shitty Deku!"
...
Or not, that was fine. The universe just seemed to want to torture him, quirk or not--
" You think you're better than me?" Bakugo growled as he blocked the exit of the classroom. " You think you can be a hero because you 'saved' me yesterday?!" He used air quotation marks before bringing his hands back down and creating small sparks.
" N-no, Kacchan," Midoria stuttered as he stumbled back, clutching his notebook to his chest. " O-Of course not-- I-I told you, m-my legs ju-just moved and I--"
" Cut the bullshit!" Bakugo snarled, knocking the greenet's notebook out of his trembling hands. A small group of students had gathered to watch the fight and were snickering. The teacher, of course, wasn't watching. Instead, he was 'marking'.
Midoria tried again, " N-No, I'm te-telling the truth I-I swe-swear!"
The blonde growled and the green-eyed boy saw the look in his red ones again.
It was definitely guilt swirling in them. Why... Why was Kacchan looking guilty?
To Midoriya's surprise, Bakugo just 'tch'ed and turned on his heel. " Come on, extras. He's not worth my time, and I'm hungry."
His group hurried after him, leaving Midoriya alone in the classroom. He sighed in relief and picked up his discarded notebook.
What had just happened? Did Kacchan just let him go? Just like that? It was really strange...
He wandered to the roof of the school and inhaled the fresh, cool air. He sat down close to the fence that lined the edge. It was peaceful.
He took out his bento box and started eating.
So... He had a quirk. He knew it wasn't a dream because his ruined clothes were still there, tucked in his bag. He had to refrain from squealing loudly that morning when he realised.
Considering how long he had been misdiagnosed 'quirkless', it probably wasn't a good idea to mention it to anyone he knew - apart from his mother- especially Kacchan. Hopefully, he'll never need to know about it, so never will.
But, going back on track, the topic of his quirk ( his quirk!! ). Finishing his food and dropping his chopsticks, he grabbed his notebook and pen from his bag. He had taken a completely new notebook today, and decided to devote it entirely to his quirk. He flicked to the first page.
Quirk Name:
He paused. What should he call it? He remembered the large wings, engulfed in flames. His eyes had felt strange, too.
The thing that stood out most to him, though, was the fact that the wings and the flames were a flickering green. The name... Green... wings? No, that was too plain... Emerald flames? Definitely not, it sounded stupid... What about just... Flaming wings? That could work - and Midoria figured it fit perfectly.
Quirk Name: Flaming Wings
Quirk User: Midoriya Izuku/ 緑谷出久
Ability/ies:
Midoria paused again. He wasn't really sure about this. He hadn't used his wings since the incident, and even then he hadn't really examined what he could do with them. He decided to leave it mostly blank.
Quirk Name: Flaming Wings
Quirk User: Midoriya Izuku/ 緑谷出久
Ability/ies: Grants the user wings.
He jolted when he heard the bell, signalling the end of lunch.
Shoot, he was gonna be late!
The rest of the day was fine, and he managed to escape Aldera High unscathed. He had told his mom that he would be at a study club - obviously, he wasn't. He had planned to try and use his quirk again, maybe analyse it better. Only now, he saw a problem...
Where the hell was he supposed to do that?!
He walked uncertainly down streets, hoping to see some kind of secluded area where he could use his quirk without prying eyes. Was there some kind of park, or--
Or a beach... That people haven't been to for ages, because of all the trash that was littered there!
Dagobah Beach was in his view after a few minutes of searching, and it was completely deserted of people, fortunately. It was secluded by piles and piles of trash that dwarfed anything close by. He couldn't even see the shoreline.
Maybe he could use this all for target practice or something. This was gonna be great!
Fifteen minutes later, Midoriya was still trying to activate his quirk. How fun.
It wasn't that there was absolutely no trace of it; he could feel the familiar tingling in his back that he had felt just before the wings had made themselves known, but they just wouldn't come out now.
" Ugh!" he groaned as he kicked a random piece of litter, before-- " Argh!" he yelped when he realised the 'random piece of litter' was much heavier than it looked.
As his foot throbbed in protest, his back's prickling got more persistent, as if it knew he was in pain.
Wait.
He stopped cursing out his foot and the litter and basically the whole universe and frowned in thought.
As if it knew he was in pain.
What if that was it? The only times he felt this tingly feeling was during one of Kacchan's beatings, that time when he was running out to save the explosive blonde, if he injured himself clumsily or... Or when he had pleaded to no one in particular that he didn't want to die, midair as he fell from that rooftop.
Maybe something had heard his silent pleas.
But coming back to his initial train of thought, the only times he felt this feeling was when he was in trouble and needed help.
An idea sparked and he was already climbing his way up a small mountain of run-down cars and broken fridges. Was this a stupid, terrible, risky plan? Yes. Was he in the right mindset for this? Probably not. Was he going to do it anyway?... Obviously. (Hotel? Trivago.)
Arriving at the top of the towering pile of rubbish he looked over the side. At this height, he probably wouldn't die on impact. Probably. Best-case scenario would be that his wings come out and save him at the last second. Worse-case scenario... he didn't want to think about that.
Before he could chicken out, he jumped.
For the second time that week.
Damn, he should stop jumping off high places.
The tickle at his back got stronger and hotter, and, midair, as he was hurtling towards the ground at an unimaginable speed, he realised something.
He had no idea how the fuck he was supposed to control wings.
