Brent and Delilah walked down the sidewalk, talking as they went.
"You look amazing, Delilah." He says. "I forgot to tell you." He adds and she smiles. "Thank you, so do you." Delilah says and he smiles.
"You have a really nice smile. I like it when you smile." Brent says, not even thinking about what he's saying.
"Thank you, I like yours, too." She blushes. He only looks down and smiles at the ground while he walks, Delilah doing the same thing.
A few minutes later, they arrive at the same park they were set up to meet at.
"I, uh, planned a picnic at the park, I hope that's okay." Brent says.
Delilah looks up, smiling. She absolutely adored picnics, ever since her grandmother, who she affectionately calls 'Nona' would take her on one every Sunday morning after church. They'd go straight from the church to their favorite park outside of town and eat sandwhiches and little bags of chips. When the weather was shitty, they'd stay home from church and have a picnic on Nona's enclosed front porch that had ceiling to floor bullet proof glass windows. They'd sit out during tornadoes and thunderstorms and just watch it rain.
Even though Delilah is terrefied of storms, she'd watch them with her.
"I love picnics. My Gramma and I used to have one every Sunday morning after church." She smiles at him and the memory, but mostly at him. He grins and they go to where he set up the picnic on the enclosed gazebo on the little duck pond. The gazebo has a glass roof, which he thought would be perfect for today, so they could look up at the sky without having to go out in the cold.
They sit down on the blanket and Brent starts nervously fumbling around in the basket.
'Don't mess up, don't mess up, don't mess up.' he thinks to himself.
Delilah chews on her bottom lip, not knowing that he's just as nervous as she is.
He hands her a sandwhich wrapped in plastic wrap, along with a mini bottle of water, taking the same out for himself.
"Bless your heart, this is my FAVORITE." Delilah says with enthusiasm as they eat their sandwhiches. Brent made his famous, but only to him, peanut butter and banana sandwhiches, which he didn't know was Delilah's favorite sandwhich. "This is tha best peanert butter 'n banana sammich I've ever had." She says, her mouth full, making Brent smile.
"I really didn't know what you'd like, so I just guessed." He grins, taking a sip of water.
While they eat, they make conversation about everything and anything. After a while, the sandwhiches and water are long forgotten and finished, even though he made extra incase they were still hungry. They lay on their backs on the blanket and look up at the sky, cloud watching. "That one looks like a dog." Delilah says, pointing up to the sky at a cloud and Brent follows her finger.
"That one looks like a Dragon." Brent points to the other side of the sky, Delilah doing the same. "I love dragons." She says.
"What song is your favorite from The Resistance?" Brent asks. "Millennia." She answers, her eyes still on the sky.
"That one looks like a heart." She chuckles and points to a cloud that's shaped like a perfect heart.
They're silent for a few moments and the clouds gather together in the sky in dark grey clumps. Even though it's very depressing looking, Delilah loves the sky before the storm hits.
"God, isn't it beautiful?" Delilah asks, looking at the sky. "It's the most perfect thing in the world." Brent says.
She doesn't know that Brent stopped looking at the sky long ago, and his gaze is now fixed on her face.
He looks at her the way a mother looks at her newborn child, or the way a young child looks at a puppy.
Delilah suddenly turns her head, and meets Brent's blue eyes. She almost looks away, but decides against it as a blush creeps up her neck.
"You have very pretty eyes." Brent says. "So do you." She replies. They sit up to look at the sky.
It looks like it could start pouring buckets at any second.
Before they know what's happening, they're both leaning in at the same time. Their lips nearly touch when they hear rapid light thudding.
Delilah looks up and glares at the sky, silently cursing Mother Nature for cock blocking.
What she doesn't know is that Brent is silently thanking Mother Nature for doing what he'd hoped. He'd planned this.
She laughs for no reason, a sound that makes Brent want to kiss her all over her face.
"God, I haven't done this in ages." Delilah says, still smiling. Brent removes his phone from his pocket and turns on his slow and acoustic playlist. He then sets his phone on the ground as I Surrender by A Day To Remember starts to play and gets up to offer her his hand. She looks at him and smiles, completely oblivious of his plans. He pulls her up to her feet.
"May I have this dance?" Brent asks her. She smiles. "You may." She smiles, nodding.
She steps towards him a bit and he takes her right hand in his left, wrapping his right arm around her waist.
Delilah puts her left hand on his shoulder, blushing down at her feet. She once again blushes down at her feet as butterflies fill her stomach.
Brent steps to the left a bit, and Delilah follows with him, but she stumbles a bit. She can't dance to save her life.
"What's the matter?" Brent asks her. "I prolly should've mentioned that I can't dance to save my life." She sheepishly admits.
He gently and easily picks her up a bit and sets her on his feet, finding that she is much lighter than he'd expected.
"I'm not too heavy, am I?" She asks, worrying. "Not at all, you're much lighter than I expected." Brent replies and they continue to dance.
The song ends sooner than they'd expected. The song that plays next makes Delilah blush like crazy and smile.
Hey There Delilah is playing. "I hope this isn't cheesy or anything, playing Hey There, Delilah for a girl named Delilah, who I happen to really like, a lot." Brent says, letting it slip. She smiles. "Not at all." She says and leans up a bit to kiss his cheek, which turns pink after she pulls away. She smiles to herself as they continue to dance. "For the record, I really like you, too." Delilah says.
"Really?" He asks her. "Really." She nods. Brent looks to her lips, then to her eyes, Delilah doing the same thing.
They start to lean in, and Delilah prays that he won't notice how sweaty her hands are, and that he can't hear her heartbeat.
"Oh, it's what you do to me. Oh, it's what you do to me. Oh, it's what you do to me, what you do to me."
Their lips gently touch and Delilah's eyes fall closed. Butterflies fill her stomach as little tingles and warmth spreads over her body.
Brent feels the same things that Delilah feels, and he gently pulls her closer to him.
He wonders if he's her first kiss, because she seems pretty unsure of herself, but he doesn't mind one bit.
They have to pull away for breath, Delilah hiding her face in his shoulder, unable to control the smile on her face, or the blush that creeps up her neck. "That was amazing." She says. "Fantastic." Brent says. The two walk back to Delilah's house after the rain subsides enough for them to walk underneath the umbrella.
The space underneath it is quite small, so they walk at each other's side to stay dry, neither of them minding the other being this close.
Brent's arm wraps around Delilah's waist and she instinctively nuzzles into his side.
"I had a great time, Brent." She says, looking up a bit to meet his eyes. "So did I, I'm glad you did." He smiles.
"I'm surprised Lilith wasn't there to cock block us again." She chuckles. "Yeah, I honestly thought that either her or David were going to jump out from nowhere." He replies, chuckling. "It wouldn't have surprised me." Delilah says. That night when Delilah and Lilith are sitting up to talk about her date, Brent texts her a short message.
"Brent<3: Did playing 'Hey There, Delilah' boost my chances at all?" with a winky face emoji.
She sent back, "I would've let you kiss me even if you hadn't played it" with a winky face and a smirking emoji.
"God, he is absolutely head over fuckin' heals for you, Dee." Lilith gushes. "I know." Delilah replies, because she knows that he is.
He texts back a minute or so later. "It's What You Do To Me" with a kissy face emoji and a heart eyes emoji, making her blush.
She sends a heart eyes and a kissy face emoji back to him and she goes off to bed, a smile on her face as she drifts off to sleep, thinking of Brent Taddie
Brent looks up at his ceiling, smiling at the thought of Delilah Escamilla.
