"Dad, why do you have two different white coats?" Gia asked, sitting in my bed whilst I did my hair.
"Well, one has an elephant patch on, and the other has a teddy bear,"
"Why don't you have one with a fairy on?"
"That's a good question. Maybe I should do that next huh?"
"Yeah. Once I went to the hospital and the doctor had a monkey,"
"I used to have one. Which time was that?"
"For the palm of my hand. That hurt,"
"Yeah, well I am glad you haven't had to go to hospital while living with me,"
"You are good,"
She turned and I smiled, booping her nose, before grabbing my white coat. I packed it into my bag, then we both went downstairs to get our shoes on.
Leaving in the morning was my least favourite. I missed the comfort of my bed, the plush pillows something my body craved so badly. The black duvet set I had splashed out on was extremely comfortable, and matched my room perfectly. While Gia settled with purple everything, mine was a neutral colour. It was my only private space, and needed it to be calm.
Before Gia, the house had been pretty plain, and neat. There were no creaking stairs, no marks on the wall, and it was a hangout for my friends and I. Now, it was definitely not pristine, but it felt like a home. She made it our home.
"Packed lunch, hair done, uniform on... you all good?"
"Yeah,"
"Great,"
"My top feels tight,"
"I'll get your old ones out tonight, okay? Does your skirt feel alright?"
"It is okay,"
"I tell you what, I don't have time to find your old shirts, but I will grab you a dress and you can change into it before you see Clarissa,"
Leaving her to get her shoes on, I went upstairs and looked through her dresses, finding the size she needed.
We got in the car and I put the radio on, then drove her down to school. It wasn't too far, but I had to drive to work so we took the car.
"Have a good day angel, I will see you later,"
"Okay,"
"I love you,"
I reached back and squeezed her hand, then she got out the car and walked into school towards a little boy who sat on his own, and appeared even smaller than her.
Content that she was safe, I turned back round and drove to work, parking in my usual spot. At the same time, Mike pulled up beside me, and gave me a large smile as he got out of the car.
"Good morning!"
"I haven't had my coffee," he grumbled humorously, "I suppose you have been up for a while,"
"Unfortunately so. Anything big today?"
"Oh, yanno, just a couple of surgeries,"
"Mhm," I laughed, "I could never,"
"Well that's because you aren't a surgeon,"
"Well I get to see lots of people all day,"
"Hey, this wasn't a competition,"
Grinning, he opened the staff room door and we put our bags in lockers, putting on our white coats and clocking in. My first duty was teaching some interns, conveniently with Ash, so I bid Mike goodbye and headed to the skills lab.
