We must have fallen asleep because the next thing I know, I'm blinking sunlight out of my eyes.
"That was pleasant." Connor says groggily. I can't help but laugh a little bit. I yawn and look around. I completely forgot where we were. I look at Connor to find his head still in the position it was last night. I can only predict that Connor will have an aching neck.
"The fire is still going. I suppose we don't have any eggs or something?" he asks hopefully. I shake my head.
"We should save them." I tell him. He sighs.
"Anything else?" Connor asks.
"Maybe I can attempt to find some hopefully non-poisonous berries and we can have them for breakfast." I say as I start to walk towards where I found the kindling.
I walk for a little while, and I manage to find an armful of berries. After I gather all I can, I walk back to the tent that we didn't sleep in.
"Here are the berries I found. Somehow I knew as soon as I saw them, they weren't poisonous." I say, trying to break the silence.
"What are they?" Connor asks. I take a good look at them, and then my eyes open wide. . . could it just be coincidence?
"Mistletoe." I tell him in a whisper. He grins. Then he turns red. I smile, and I also feel my skin burning as if I was over a fire myself.
"I also found some strawberries. Don't eat the mistletoe. It's poisonous. I remember that because it reminds me of my family when we were in Arizona. My dad used to get it while he was on the battlefield, and when he came home for Christmas, he would put it over my mom's head, and then he would put it over mine. We would then finally reunite. It's been tradition ever since I was six. I loved Christmas there." I tell him, lost in vague memories.
"And by there, you mean Arizona?" He asks. I nod.
"I think we should pack up and move on don't you think?" Connor asks. I can tell he's trying to change the subject. I nod my head.
We pack up the tent and start to walk towards where we think is west, when my phone starts buzzing. I pull it out and look at the caller ID in amazement. It's Kylie and Melinda. I answer it and Kylie immediately starts to speak.
"Where are you? The JPD has been looking for you for two days! We are so worried about you!"
"Wait what? The JPD you say?" I am completely astounded. Connor looks at me with fear in his eyes. The police. Someone contacted the police. I can't speak. I never thought of anything if this would happen. . . but who made the call?
"Kylie, I'm going to give you instructions." I tell her. I notice Connor is looking at me, doing motions with his hands. Sign language. He's telling me what to say in sign language. When I translate it in my head, I finally speak what Connor wants me to say.
"Go to the police, and tell them that I'm alright, and that I'm with my mom on a vacation. Don't contact my father, because he knows about it. Got it?" I ask her.
"I-I suppose so. At least you're alright. You're sure your fine?" I can sense the anxiety in her tone. I soften my voice and I close my eyes.
"I'm just fine. I've been taken care of well. You don't need to worry." I tell her. I open my eyes and I glance at Connor. He wears a smile.
"Ok, Ally." She says, reassured. "Goodbye." She says, hanging up. I put my phone to sleep, and I slide it into my pocket. Connor and I both stay silent as we continue to walk through the forest.
