How may I help you?" The librarian asks. She is at the front desk with a black apron and a green polo shirt. She has grey hair and dark green eyes. Her pale skin glowed as the sun came in through the window. I walked up to the desk, making sure to keep a smile on my face.
"Um, I have a question about a book I checked out," I reply, nervously.
"Could you put the book on the counter please so I may see which book you're talking about?" She asks.
"Yes, ma'am." I respond, putting the book on the counter of the register. I put my signature in the check out section of the book so I didn't get red-carded. The librarian inspected the book carefully, running her fingers on the rough leather fabric.
"What is your question, darling?" the librarian asks. I hesitate for a few moments, wondering how I should ask the question I need to ask her.
"Well, I was wondering. . How did you get this book in the first place? Who brought it to you? I'm just curious because I noticed how old it was." I asked. I put a halfway fake smile on my face. I hoped that the way I asked it wouldn't be rude. Also, I did tell half the truth. The book was old. I sighed of relief when I saw the librarian smile.
"I'm glad you're interested. History is always an incredible thing. I unfortunately don't know how this book came to be. What I do know is a local janitor at one of the schools came with the book, telling me it was in a student's locker. Alas, That is all I can say that is true." She said.
"Your fine, thank you for the information! May I get your name?" I ask.
"My name is Linda. Thank you for asking. May I get yours?" Linda asks.
"Ally. Ally Green." I reply.
I pedal back to my house and I pop some frozen chicken nuggets in the oven. They don't take that long to cook, so they're done roughly twenty minutes after I first got home. I then prepared some brilliant packaged mashed potatoes.
After I half-way complete eating I go into the foyer to call Connor. I pick up the wall-phone and I begin to dial his number until I hear the familiar ringing sound.
"Whats up, Ally?" Connor asks. I can tell his voice is raspy, so I can assume he's eating.
"I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, Connor." I begin.
"No, your fine Ally. I promise." Connor replies.
"You sure? You sound like you just swallowed sandpaper!" I reply sarcastically.
"It's possible!" Connor jokingly replies.
"I hope not, I don't think it's edible." I reply, giggling. Connor laughs with me. I finally am able to breathe normally and I start to speak.
"Ok so I went over to the library that I got the book from. I asked Linda, the librarian, about the book, and she said that one of the janitors found the book in a student's locker in the middle school. ." I trail off. A student's locker in the middle school. . and Lily put it there. My mind instantly goes to the early visions I had. The mermaids and fairies trapped in those. . cages. . then Lily told me about. . a quest. . she gave me a book as well . . . wait, a book?
"Connor. . I think that book was in my locker. . wait, could you hold for a second? I'll be back in a giffy." I reply. I bolt towards the table where I put the book when I came in. I then flip through the pages. This is where I found the note for the first clues Lily gave me. But how? The contents are all missing. Then it hits me. This book is made of magic! Thats why! I hurry back towards the phone before Connor disconnects.
"It's a match, Connor." I tell him. We both stay silent for a few seconds, caught in our own thoughts. Connor then interrupts the silence.
"Do you think that Lily left it there in hope that you would find it first or not?" Connor questions.
"Most definitely." I reply.
"Why don't you come over sometime tomorrow so we could discuss the poem and on how to start our quest?" Connor starts.
"Sounds good. What time?"
"Maybe 9:00 A.M? My father works all day. Early in the morning, and late in the evening. Like he always does." Connor replies.
"Fantastic! See you then!" I reply cheerfully.
I hang up and go back to my now lukewarm chicken nuggets. I was still hungry so I made a PB&J sandwich.
I hop into bed and watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows until I fall asleep.
