Wait what?" I ask. I take a brief glance at Connor, and then I glance at Coco.
"You heard Chip right." Peanut replies. She winks at me. I can feel my hands starting to shake in shock and disbelief.
"We need to save Lily and Hazel they-" I get cut off by Chip. He puts his paw on my foot.
"We know. Lily and Hazel sent us." Chip says.
"But why?" I ask him.
"To help!" The chipmunks chant together.
"With our quest?" I ask, still completely confused.
"Well, what else except helping you with the quest can we help with? Look at us! I mean, Lily, Hazel. . . Of course we're helping you with the quest!" Peanut announces.
"You're a feisty one, aren't you?" I ask. Peanut cocks her head to one side and gives a sly grin. I notice Connor looking at me. His eyes are softer than before, and he looks at my hand while I scratch the chipmunks cheeks and chins. I quickly change my gaze and I look at the Peanut.
"Well, we've wasted enough time. We should get going." I tell Peanut. Peanut looks at Chip, and they nod at me. I look at Connor and he beckons me to stand next to him. As I do I feel what seems to be one of the chipmunks paws tugging at my pant leg. I glance down to see Chip looking at me.
"Where are you going? You heard Peanut! We're coming with you!" He says in his squeaky voice, trying to climb up. I remove his paws from my leg gently, and I lift them both into the palm of my hand.
"Fine! You guys can come, but only because I respect your attitude. I can be stubborn every once in a while." I groan while trying to hide a smile. Connor raises an eyebrow, and once we start moving, he moves closer to me. Close enough to feel his breath on my neck.
"Sounds like they'll be a handful." Connor whispers in my ear. I chuckle softly. "At least they're here to help. Isn't it all that matters?" I ask him.
"I suppose. You might be the one to blame if I don't get any sleep tonight though." He whispers sarcastically.
"Me? Of all people, blame Lily and Hazel for sending them here."I say, jokingly.
"I suppose." He reluctantly agrees. "I'm sure you can handle them." He adds, his eyes soft.
He moves away, but his eyes show laughter and much needed sarcasm. I look behind myself to see Coco slowly flying behind us.
The chipmunks move around in my palms, as they drowsily nap. The sun starts to sink and seems to glow on a nearby pond, and I start to think about a resting place.
"Hey guys. How's this?" I ask Chip and Peanut quietly. They must be really tired. Peanut opens one eye and nods slowly without looking up. Chip stays in a deep sleep. I brush my hair with my free hand, and then I nod to Connor. He slowly trudges towards a big, elegant oak tree.
Once we manage to reach it, I put the chipmunks on a secure, wide branch, and I wrap them in a small towel. I moved towards the now pitched tent that Connor had put up.
Connor is sitting outside of it, and I can see his silhouette from inside. I go outside of the tent to see him looking at the sky. I slowly sit down next to him, and we start stargazing as a pair. Together we sit there, for the second time, watching the miniature suns shining in the royal blue night.
