The chipmunks must have crawled out from the tree because by next morning, they were curled up in my lap when I woke. The early morning sun reflected on the nearby pond.
"Hey guys." I say to them as they start to stir.
"Morning Ally, Hi Connor." Peanut says, still drowsy.
"Whats going on?" Connor says, half asleep.
"Just waking up. Then i'll get some food." I tell Connor. He nods and quickly dozes off again. I smile and I shake my head. I see Cocoa snoozing in a nearby tree. I put a hand on Connor's shoulder before I get up to head into the wilderness.
I come back with berries and a few other supplies sometime around 8:00. I find Connor, Chip, and Peanut playing together. Chip and Peanut are tackling Connor while Connor is rolling around on the forest floor laughing. I can't help it. I laugh too.
"Hey guys! I'm back!" I yell. After waiting a few seconds, I'm sure they won't hear me.
"Don't forget about me!" Cocoa screeches. I jump, startled. She flies down from her perch and she lands on Connor's chest. Connor throws himself into a laughing fit. I did forget about her. Whoops.
"Here Coco! I brought some berries for you." I tell her, holding out a hand with the berries inside. She squawks with delight and snatches them with her talons. Parrot talons hurt, and I know with experience. I wince as the pain throbs. Connor looks at me with an understanding look.
"I feel your pain." He groans, half sarcastically. I roll my eyes and I turn towards the fire that Connor probably had made, and I start to prep breakfast. I get out some of the eggs we had luckily found on the way, and I crack them into a pot I brought that is above the fire. With a stick, I stir the eggs until they are scrambled. I then place them on a nearby log,so they can kinda cool. Connor slowly moves towards it, not afraid to show his hunger.
When they are finished, I give some to Connor. He licks his lips as he receives it. He gulps it down, without chewing. He then scrunches his face up.
"Do we have any salt nearby?" He asks. I smile and I point to the river nearby.
"Right over there. Just be sure to not drink too much." I tell him. I giggle. He stares at me.
"I'm not going to drink that!" He says. He then smooths his hair back and returns to where the chipmunks are sunbathing on the grass.
I carefully take nibbles of my share, determined to make it last. I break out the chocolate and eat some of it. I offer some to Connor without saying a word. He scrunches up his face and shakes his head. He puts his hand out, and he looks away.
"Not a chance." He says. I sigh dramatically.
"Alright. Your loss." I tell him as I move away. I sit down by a log, looking out to the entrance of the lake. I take a slow bite, appreciating the taste of the chocolate.
I finish eating a few mini sized bars of the chocolate, when I notice Connor coming up to me. He sits down beside me and he stares at the river. He then looks at me, and the red in his eyes is clearer than before. I then jump as I hear a voice. . singing. I look around, attempting to find where the sound is coming from. I then turn my head to the side and I lean in closely. It's coming from the sea. My ears perk up as I hear the beautiful sound coming to my ears. I look at Connor, and he looks at me.
"Do you hear that?" He whispers softly. I nod. Connor slowly stands up, and takes a few small steps closer to the shoreline. I grab his hand, concerned what might happen. He turns and looks at me. We stay in the position for a few moments, before he lets go and moves forward. I reluctantly stand up and I move steadily behind him.
He stops where the water meets the short stretch of sand. I pause. He then turns his head to the side and he perks his ears. I do the same. The voice, louder now, echoes around the lake.
The voice grows louder every step we take. The fluttery soprano makes me stop and listen to the heart-stopping voice.
Connor then abruptly sprints forward. I hesitate before I run after him.
Connor pants as he stops short, but he keeps his back straight as he listens. I move next to him, trying to pick up the sound. His eyes widen promptly. I stare in the same direction, and I immediately see it. A mermaid!
