Adira's P.O.V

Who knew breakfast was also the most intense moment in the day? The second I saw Zenny walk away, I knew that she was hurt. Zenny wasn't someone to back down easily, so I wondered what was happening in that girl's head.

After Hailey and Heather left, Hugo went to the bathroom, which gave both Lewis and me time to check up on Zenny. As we came close to my bedroom's door, we heard Zenny on the phone with someone. She seemed really upset, it was like she was confused whether she was mad or sad.

"This was a dumb idea." We overheard, "I knew this was going to happen, it always happens. Once you feel someone is your friend, they stab you right into the heart."

Both Lewis and I looked at each other, we weren't being loyal to Zenny either spying on her. We decided to talk to her alone once she has calmed down.

"She is hard to figure out isn't she?" Lewis asked me.

"Figure out? I am starting to believe she isn't even human at times." I laughed.

"But she was hurt. I don't know, but she seemed like she didn't just come here for a new start, I feel like she didn't even have a choice." Lewis replied.

"Hailey went too far this time. Blaming everything on Zenny, if anything, Zenny made Hailey's drama less. She's been taking the insults and threats more than anyone else, Heather knows this, why did she just agree with Hailey?" I questioned.

"What if Hailey is threatening Heather?" Lewis guessed. And I have to say, for the first time I wished that he was wrong.

"Heather knows Zenny can take care of Hailey, everyone knows this now. Hailey's words can't affect us like they used to." I responded.

"True, because most of our class aren't Americans, but Heather did grow up in Alaska, which is an American state, Hailey can threaten her if she got something on her," Lewis explained. "But forget Heather for a second, Zenny is in pain right now."

"That's the thing, both girls are right. Zenny is pretty secretive, she doesn't tell us her name, she keeps saying 'it's a long story' every time she does something weird, and don't even get me started on the whole personality-changing stuff. But Hailey was out of line. Zenny was just trying to protect Hugo, it's what she does." I spoke.

"She is crazy and mysterious, I will tell you that. But one thing I know is that she is loyal, there is no way she is fake. Why would she risk getting expelled or even arrested to protect someone she only knew for a few days? It doesn't make sense. Hailey has it wrong on her." Lewis stated.

"I never have it wrong. Zenny is hiding something dangerous about herself, there is no way she would be admitted to this school and still attend her old school. She is running away from something in her country." Hailey explained.

"Why are you here? And she isn't attending her old school, I would know." I responded.

"Adira, you've only known this girl for four months. She comes from a country at war for crying out loud. She could be dangerous." Heather spoke.

"First of all, that's also my country. And like she said, you don't know the full story, why assume that the country is even dangerous? If everyone there is like Zenny, then I would love to live there, plus stop bringing stuff you heard on the news to this. Zenny keeps saying how beautiful the country is and how it's NOT at war." I explained.

"Yeah, but it can get attacked any minute," Hailey noted.

"Hopefully it won't. Violence isn't the answer, Zenny never used violence, even though she could've. She proved that she is peaceful, and yet you two are treating her as if she's a criminal." Lewis snapped. "All she did was 'fight' to protect her friends, you fight for the sake of ruining someone's day. You blamed her for causing drama when in reality you are the one who has been causing it for twelve years, she just gave you a taste of your own medicine. And I know what you are planning Hailey, so let me make it clear, Zenny isn't leaving this school, and I will make sure of it myself."

The look on Lewis's face gave me goosebumps. He was staring at Hailey and giving her a very threatening look, I didn't know he could even make that face.

"What's wrong Lewis? Afraid to lose your crush?" Heather teased.

Lewis really wasn't in the mood for games, he stared at Heather as he replied: "Not crush, friend, one better than you'll ever be."

Heather's face changed from playful to offended as she yelled: "Hey! You can't talk to me like that, I have power over you!"

Lewis, who was walking away, turned around and smiled: "You have no power over me, no matter who you are, you are nothing but Hailey's copycat today."

As he walked away he bumped into Zenny. Her face looked swollen, probably because she was crying. I ran to Zenny, not even looking at either Hailey or Heather. When I got to Zenny I pulled her and Lewis inside our room and shut the door.

"Can I help you?" She asked.

"Nice question, we can ask the same thing," I replied.

"Don't take this in the wrong way, but I really don't feel like socializing," Zenny stated.

"Too bad, you have to tell us what is really going on. We can't fight on your side if we don't know anything." Lewis responded calmly.

"I can't talk about it, you just have to trust me." Zenny shook her head.

"Zenny, you love talking, why won't you talk to us?" I asked.

"It's a long story." She answered, looking at her shoes.

"Why do you keep saying that?" Lewis and I asked at the same time.

"Look, you want to know something about me? Fine, I had trouble making friends in Lebanon, especially because I felt like I never fit in with my classmates, and I didn't try hard enough. Truth be told, I don't know how to act around people because every time I think I finally have a friend, they end up leaving, or pretending that I no longer exist. Like I said, new start." Zenny spoke.

"But you seem like a cool person, why didn't people want to be your friend?" Lewis asked.

"Because I am different. I am shy, so I come off as mean. I am an introvert, so I don't really know how to react to being around a lot of people. And worst of all, I am a fake, I don't know how it's like to trust people." Zenny expressed.

I didn't know how to reply to her words, and neither did Lewis. It's not because we were mad at her, it's because we never thought that Zenny had a hard time in her old school. She seemed like the life of the party, not the one sitting in the corner wondering who she should talk to.

"But it's okay." She suddenly spoke, then she smiled as she continued: "This is a new chance, and I want to make the best of it. Hailey nor Heather are going to make me hate myself, I am not a quitter. They'll see what force they are messing with, unlike them, I will play this game fairly. I won't stand and cower in front of a bully, I will do what I do best, what most of us Lebanese do best, protect our loved ones and friends."

I looked at Lewis and I knew we were both thinking the same thing, and that was 'Zenny is beyond crazy'.

As she left the room, she turned around and spoke: "By the way, Aurora and Stella say hi. They texted you and the text showed up as a notification. Oh and so does Adria, she called me a few minutes ago, such a sweet girl. I wish Heather was more like Adria, but we don't control people."

I swear I can't explain how Zenny works, she is beyond peculiar. If one day she tells us that she is from another species I would believe her because she flipped her mood completely and went on with her day as if nothing happened.
