We entered the double doors into a massive room.
There was about 200 people or so scattered amongst the room. Everyone looked so intimidating. "Come on, I have to chat with people" Chase said as he led us into the crowd of people.
"Chase!" a man called when he saw us. He came over with a woman beside him. He was about my dad's age, with dark skin and hair. The woman beside him looked scared out of her mind.
"Julian" Chase nodded in greeting. "Why, who is this young lady?" Julian asked. He looked me over with hungry eyes.
"This is Kaitlyn" Chase replied. "What have you been doing to the poor girl Chase?" Julian asked. "She looks like she hasn't slept in forever."
I forgot that I must've looked as terrible as I felt. "She didn't sleep last night" Chase told him.
They began to talk about Mafia stuff that I didn't understand. As they chatted, I looked over at the woman.
She looked not much younger than Julian, but her pale skin and skinny frame gave her a younger demeanor. Her blonde hair fell down, covering most of her face.
I'm guessing she wasn't with him by choice. I tried to catch her eye but she kept looking frantically around the room.
"Hi" I said softly to her. She snapped her gaze to mine. She looked at me with big eyes.
"Hello."
She said it so quietly I almost didn't hear it. "I'm Kaitlyn" I told her. "What's your name?"
She looked up at Julian quickly but he was still in deep conversation with Chase."Phoebe" she whispered.
"What a pretty name" I smiled at her. "It was my grandma's" she said faintly.
"So how long have you been with Julian?" I asked her, trying to make conversation. "I don't know" she shrugged. "Maybe 3 months."
"How long have you been here?" she asked me. "I've only been with Chase for a couple days" I told her.
"Have you-" she faltered. She looked up at Julian and Chase worriedly but they were still in conversation. "Have I what?" I said, snapping her attention back to me.
"Have you ever tried getting away?" I stiffened. I rembered all the times I had tried to escape and how bad they ended for me.
"A couple times" I admitted. "What about you?" I asked her. She looked at Julian again. I guess she wasn't comfortable saying these things with him around.
"I tried in the beginning" she said. "But now I've realized that it's useless." I thought over her words. "I've been beginning to think it's useless too" I told her.
Julian and Chase finished talking and turned to us. "I'll see you later" he said to Chase with a wink in my direction. Phoebe gave me a small wave before walking away with Julian.
"Did you make a friend?" Chase asked me. "If you can even call it that" I replied.
We began walking again through the crowd of people. As we went, Chase leaned down to my ear. "And just so you know, it is useless."
...
For the next hour Chase stopped to talk to people and I stayed at his side.
I didn't find anyone else to talk to the rest of the time, so it was quite boring listening to Chase and the others ramble on about Mafia business.
I was feeling very uncomfortable amongst everyone. They all seemed to have the same aura about them that just screamed evil.
Chase had now been talking with another woman for 10 minutes now. I wasn't paying attention to them anymore. Since I was bored out of my mind and I hadn't slept all night, I was feeling extremely tired.
