HER LUNGS BEGGED FOR AIR as Daphne shot up in her sleeping bag. She panted, looking at Trinity. Climbing down the platform, Daphne splashed some water of her face before falling down against the grass near the river.
"You're here earlier than normal." Newt sighed, sitting down next to her. He looked at her, noticing her covering her face with her hands. Reaching over, he pulled her hands away, looking at her. "Daph, you okay?"
She nodded, deciding not to speak, not wanting to risk her voice cracking and her beginning to cry.
He looked at her, noticing the pain in her eyes she was trying so desperately to hide. "Well, I know that's not true. Can't sleep again?"
Nodding again, Daphne looked at him, resting her head on his shoulder.
Another nightmare. Just like every night. This time it was worst. More flashes of her and Trinity's previous life. The person she was. Of Newt, the old Newt, the one she used to know.
She was about to find out how her father taught her these things. Everything in her head, science, math, at such a young age. As far as she can tell, she's known these things forever. Can't that have always been the case, Daphne wasn't born a genius.
As far as she was aware. So, she was about to find out but then she heard screams.
And then she woke up.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Newt questioned.
No." Daphne finally spoke, shaking her head. "It's not that I couldn't sleep either, I did sleep, I just— I had a nightmare."
"Oh," Newt whispered. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be, it's not a big deal," She mumbled. "It just confused me, made my head even more busy than it was before. God, when am I ever gonna get to sleep?"
"What do you mean?" Newt questioned. "Nene, haven't you been sleeping? After we meet up here—"
"No," She cut him off, hugging her knees. "After we both fall asleep here, I just wake up from another night and just stay awake."
"Why don't you wake me?" Newt whispered. "I could have helped you."
"How?" Daphne asked. "It's my own mind that won't let me sleep, Newt. I just want to rest, to sleep—"
"You will, you will," Newt promised, pulling her closer to him. "There's just a lot going on in that head of yours."
"Why?" Daphne groaned. "I'm tired, I'm so tired."
"I know," He said, sighing. "What do you have nightmares about?"
"My life before the Glade," Daphne admitted and Newt's eyes widened. "Who I used to be, me and Trinity."
"How?" Newt asked. "How are you remembering anything? That never happens to anyone."
"I don't know," Daphne shrugged as she wondered if she should tell him the rest. That they knew each other. "I just want them to stop. I don't think I want to remember."
"Why?" He questioned. "Don't you want to know who you are?"
"No," She shook her head. "Because something happened to me, something I don't want to remember."
Daphne looked down at her arms, playing with the end of her sleeve. "I just want to sleep, Newt."
"Okay," Newt whispered, looking at her. "Come here."
She laid her head in his lap, her eyes closing and she sighed softly. Newt smiled down at her, brushing some hair out of her face.
"I'll be here, love, just try to sleep." Newt promised and Daphne smiled, thankful he couldn't see her blushing.
-
When Daphne woke up, her head still sat in Newt's lap. She looked up, seeing him glancing down at her. He smiled at her, saying, "How'd you sleep?"
"Good." Daphne sat up. "What about you?"
"I didn't." Newt shrugged and Daphne gave her a look. "It's fine Daph, you're the one that needed sleep, I just wanted to make sure you slept through the night."
"You didn't have to do that." She shook her head.
He shrugged again, placing a hand on her arm, "I wanted to."
"Thank you." Daphne smiled. "Tonight we'll both sleep."
Newt nodded, both of them standing up and Trinity ran over. "Back to the maze, Trin?"
"You know it." Trinity nodded and hugged Daphne tightly. "I'll see you later."
Daphne nodded and Newt placed a hand on her shoulder.
-
"Newt!" Fry ran up to the blonde, Winston following behind. "You will never guess what Minho told us before he and Trin and the runners left for the maze."
"What?" Newt wondered, not looking at them as he continued to work in the garden.
"That you and Daphne, the two of you were sitting near the river this morning." Fry began.
"You two already knew that," Newt shrugged. "Don't tell anyone else though, I don't want the shanks to give her shit for it."
"Not just that, shank," Winston smirked, patting his back. "Her head was in your lap, she was sleeping on you."
"My man!" Fry yelled, laughing and Winston chuckled.
"Enough, cut it out," Newt shook his head. "It wasn't anything like that, she couldn't sleep so— I don't know."
"Daphne!" Jeff screamed and Newt turned around at the sound of the girl's name. He looked over at the Med-Jack hut, where Daphne ran out with a syringe in her hand.
Gally and Ben held Justin in their arms, who struggled and screamed. He was pale and veins covered his body. Daphne's eyes widened as she backed up slightly.
"Holy shit." Daphne whispered and Newt ran over, helping Gally and Ben restrain Justin.
"He was stung?" Newt looked Gally, who shrugged.
"We stayed behind from this run, I was taking a break," Ben stammered. "Justin was trying to hide his sting."
"Daphne, stop standing there and sedate him!" Jeff demanded and Daphne nodded. She ran over, her hand shaking as she lifted the syringe towards Justin's arm.
"No!" Justin yelled and tried to hit Daphne, making her back up.
"Hey!" Newt warned, holding him tighter. "Daph, do it now."
She ran back, immediately pushing the syringe into Justin's skin. He began to settle down, eventually falling unconscious.
"What happened to him?" Daphne looked at Newt.
"He was stung by a Griever." Newt answered and looked at everyone else. "Gally, go get Alby, we have to figure out what to do with him."
"What do you mean? Can't we cure him?" Daphne questioned and glanced at the table of chemicals in the corner of the room. Jeff and Clint have practically named it as Daphne's desk, because she was always messing around there. "There has to be some formula or something—"
"Daphne, this is what happens," He grabbed her shoulders. "When you're stung by a griever, this is what happens. When Alby gets here, he's probably going to declare that we banish him. He's too far gone."
