you were an intern at GSMH and you were on Dr. Webber's service today. You were engaged to your soulmate, Edward, and you were getting married next month.

"Grey-Shepherd, incoming trauma, 2 minutes out. Gown up" Webber instructs. you gown up and meet him outside in the cold seattle weather. the ambulance parks up and the paramedic announces the patient.

"Eli Karev, 19, showing all symptoms of appendicitis but he couldn't walk himself to the ER" the paramedic announced

"Karev?" you look up at Richard

"Karev." he replies. your uncle alex left seattle unexpectedly years ago and you never forgave him for leaving without a proper goodbye. he was always there for you, when your dad died you knew you could always talk to your uncle alex about anything.

"okay eli, i'm dr. grey-shepherd. you will need surgery so is there anyone i can call?" you dreadfully ask

"no my parents are here now with my sister" he smiles. you turn around and see alex, izzie and their daughter alexis. you freeze, not knowing what to do, when you lock eyes with alex. you scurry off to find jo and distract her from the fact that the love of her life who left her with a letter is back.

"hey y/n, why do you look like you've seen a ghost?" she asks. jo was like your older sister, you would tell her everything and she would give you advice.

"hey jo, do you wanna get something to eat?" you bluff. she nods and you walk to the cafeteria and order some food.

"let's not eat here, let's go to the tunnel it's quieter there" you say, trying to avoid the karevs.

"y/n i know something is wrong just tell me!" she says

you sigh "alex is here, with izzie and their kids. their son needs an appendectomy and they just had to go here"

"what? are they..." she asks

you cut her up "still together? it looks it. i'm just so pissed, he left you with a fucking letter! and i'm on webber's service so i have to see them"

"it's okay, i'm okay now. i'm happy! besides, i have you... you're like the little sister i never had! if you want me to get you on my service i can" she offers

"no it's okay" you smile "if i'm gonna become the best intern i can't mix personal and professional". you hug her and meet the other interns outside.

"did you see? apparently your uncle is back?" jennifer says

"he's not my uncle" you correct

"is he still going to walk you down the aisle?" your best friend Megan asks

"No, he doesn't deserve to do that" you sigh. when you were thirteen you asked alex to walk you down the aisle when you get married as your dad unfortunately couldn't do so.

"well who is going to walk with you?" jen asks

"my mom. i'm gonna ask her now" you say and go to find your mom. you see her walk out of OR3 and you run up to her and pull her over to talk.

"when i get married can you walk me down the aisle?" you blurt out

"i'll be honoured to! is something wrong, you look worried?" mom says

"alex is here, and izzie and their stupid karev kids. their son, Eli, needs his appendix out and i'm the lucky one who is on webber's service so i'm on the case" you rant

your mom hugs you "it's okay honey, this is what being a surgeon is. hard cases, but we get through it at the end of the day". you smile and go back to the karevs room.

"hey eli, myself and dr webber have gotten OR2 ready for your appendectomy now. your family can wait in the waiting room downstairs" you say professionally

"you look very grown up now y/n, the last time i saw you you were a baby!" izzie says, trying to break the ice

"yeah well it was a long time ago, i'm in intern now" you reply

"h-how have you been? how's mer?" alex asks.

"great, she has me. i'm her person now" you sass and walk off

"you know the doctor?" alexis asks

"yeah... we go back a while" izzie says. you start to chart by the nurses station when alex walks up to you.

"i saw a ring on your finger... are you engaged?" he asks

you reply, even though it's none of his business "yeah actually, getting married next month"

"oh wow congratulations! it seems like only yesterday you went on your first date" he smiles.

"i'm gonna find webber" you say and run off. you shut the door of the on call room and cry in the corner. you think back to all the times when alex was there for you, when he deserved to be called your uncle.

"when i get married... can you walk me down the aisle? since my dad can't" you ask

"of course y/n... i'm always gonna be by your side, no matter what" he replies

the door of the on call room opens and you quickly hide your tears.

"hey, thought i would find you in here" mom says

"hey, i have a ton of work to do so i gotta go" you lie. your mom pulls you into a hug and you can't help but cry into her arms. "i don't know why i keep crying... i didn't cry this much when he went! i-i think it's because i wanted him to walk me down the aisle and he left but now i'm actually getting married"

"it's gonna be okay honey, i'm here" mom comforts. you pull yourself together and scrub in for the appendectomy, which was a success.

"do you want me to tell the family?" webber offers

"it's okay pops, i just have to keep personal and professional separated" you smile. you call richard 'pops' because he's like a grandfather to you.

"that's my girl! by the way, you're the best intern so far so keep it up, everything has so many good things to say about you" he replies, that makes you feel so much better.

"okay so Eli is out of surgery and it was a success. we easily took the appendix out with no troubles and he's now recovering in his room" you say

"Thank you dr. Grey-shepherd" their daughter says, she's no older than Bailey. you walk off and alex catches up to you... again.

"you keep avoiding me, what's wrong y/n... we used to be so close" he says

you roll your eyes "yes, used to. past tense"

"just let me explain why i left" he replies

"i don't care that you left!" you snap "i care that you never said goodbye, i care that you left jo heartbroken, i care that you left mom when she needed you most"

"i left for my kids y/n... i didn't want to leave everyone, especially you. but coming back, i'm so proud of how far you've come. you don't need a person, you're just like your mother, independent and strong" he says

"your kids look just like you, unfortunate for them" you laugh

"so we good?" he asks

"only if you keep in touch with me, and with mom" you deal.

sometimes, the best thing to do is move on. let go of the grudge. forgive and forget, no matter how much it hurt you.
