Looking down at the list Danny had given me I felt butterflies in my stomach. Why had I agreed to go along with this?
It’s not that I’m scared of water, or the beach for that matter, but the fact that I am one of two people in their twenties playing in the sand is going to get us a few strange looks.
“Come on Katie, move your butt,” Danny was grinning at me whilst swinging the cheaply made buckets and spades that could only come from a two dollar shop around his head. I groaned internally and quickened my pace.
What kind of person puts ‘build a giant sandcastle’ on their summer bucket list? A big giant kid with beautiful eyes apparently.
Danny finally found the spot he thought was perfect and sat down, his face turning serious.
“Now, this castle has to be good, yes?” I nodded quizzically, not quite sure why he was being so serious towards a sandcastle, something little kids built for fun.
“Okay let’s start,” another lopsided grin was shot in my direction before he threw a bucket and spade in my direction.
Following Danny down to the ocean we both scooped the wet sand into our buckets and walked back to our spot.
“So how big is this thing going to be anyway?” I turned my bucket over with as much speed as I could and patted the bottom of it, lifting the bucket away to show a half demolished sand pile.
“The biggest thing in the history of everything,” His eyes shot down to my failed attempt to begin the sand castle and with a shake of his head he stood up and kicked my sand castle. Okay, My pile of dirt.
“What was that for?” I shout. Slightly pissed that he kicked over my cruddy castle. Danny just gave me a pointed look and picked his bucket up from next to his pretty much perfect castle. A smug look made it’s way to his face before he headed back down towards the ocean.
“Smart ass,” I mutter, picking up my own discarded bucket and chased after him.
After a few more rounds of this Danny came and sat next to me.
“Do you even know how to make a sandcastle?” He asks, pointing a look towards my failing attempts to build something resembling a tower.
“Yes, how stupid do you think I am?” I ask, grabbing the bucket and huffing away towards the ocean, Danny caught up with me quickly, and lent down beside me.
“Well, you can’t get a sandcastle right…” he trailed off, a smirk clearly planted on his face. I groaned, throwing small fistfuls of sand into the bucket.
“Want me to show you?” I nodded slowly and let my hands fall to my sides. This was embarrassing, I couldn’t even make a sandcastle and the hot guy has to teach me.
“You have to pat it down a bit, make sure there are no loose sand particles, if it’s compact the stand is more likely to resemble a sandcastle,” He finished patting the sand into my bucket and quickly did his own before we headed back to our little spot.
I tipped the bucket over again, hoping that it would hopefully resemble more of a bucket shape rather than a pile of crap.
Squinting my eyes I pulled the lid off slowly, revealing a near perfect tower.
