The shrill ring of my mobile was what awoke me at 3am, only four hours after Danny had left my house.
“Hello?” My voice husky, my mind groggy with the presence of sleep still weighing heavily down onto me.
“Katie, You need to come to the hospital,” the grogginess faded in an instant, my mind scanning for anything to prove I was dreaming.
“What’s wrong? Jeremy, what has happened?” I sat up, rolling my body out of the bed, and began pulling a pair of jeans on.
“I need to tell you this in person, but please just get here,”
Throwing a shirt over my head I hung up the phone and raced out into the street, sprinting down the road until I reached the hospital six blocks away.
Puffing, I jogged up to the receptionist, asking where Jeremy Rossi was.
“Room 401, love,” The woman looked at me with sad eyes as I thaked her and ran towards the elevator, pressing the button for the 4th floor.
Getting off the elevator I began walking down the hallway, noting that room 401 was at the end of the hall. I tried to calm down my breathing, knowing that whatever is going on, and whoever is in that bed, everything will be okay.
A figure sat on one of the hard plastic chairs in the hallway, their back slumped and their head in their hands. I cleared my throat, attracting the attention of the figure, and as soon as I saw his face I knew who it was.
I walked slowly towards him, his eyes filled with sadness, and when I reached him, his arms circled around me in a tight embrace. Silence enveloped us, creating a closeness that Jeremy and I never really had, and as I pulled away, I looked at briefly before heading for the door.
“Katie wait,” Jeremy’s hand encaged my wrist, pulling me away from the door.
“You need to know what is wrong, I can’t lt you go in there without knowing,” I nodded, watching Jeremy move towards the plastic chairs and sit down, then motioning for me to do the dame.
I took my time, dreading to know what happened, but at the same time I wanted to know with all my heart, it was Danny after all.
I slowly placed myself on the chair, my back straight and my eyes facing the bright white wall across the hall.
“I have always been one to beat around the bush, but in this case I can’t really do it anymore than I have now.”
Jeremy paused, his breathing heavy and ridged. He took one large breath before continuing.
“Danny has a Rhabdoid Tumor sitting on his brain stem, he collapsed as soon as he came home and was raced to hospital, Doctors only just finished operating on him.”
It felt like my heart had stopped beating, my head became dizzy, I moved my hands onto the arm rests of the chair to hold my body upright.
“Danny, has a brain tumor?” my voice barely left my mouth as a whisper, tears had begun forming in my eyes.
“Yes, and I’m sorry Katie, but..” Jeremy stopped, his voice cracking under the pressure. I looked away from the wall and to the boy who sat next to me. His chin began to quiver and a tear slid itself down Jeremy’s face.
What he was going to say next began to sink in, Danny wasn’t going to make it.
I stood up.
“I need to see him,” my hand reached up and roughly swiped the tears away from my face. Jeremy nodded and allowed me to walk into the room.
A soft cry left my lips when I saw him, lying in the bed, cords coming out of his body, his head covered in bandages.
“Katie? Is that you?” Danny asked, trying to lift himself so he was sitting up.
“Danny!” his name left my lips in a cry of both happiness that he was still alive but sadness that he was on the brink of death.
My body collided with his as tears poured down my face. He hugged my body tightly into him and let me cry against his shoulder. Five minutes had past when I had calmed down enough to speak to him.
“Is this why you started the bucket list?” I murmured, my hand reaching out to entangle itself within his. Danny nodded and smiled.
“I wasn’t going to leave this world without doing some pretty cool stuff.” Danny squeezed my hand lightly, his pale face lightened only by his smile.
“Where you ever going to tell me?” I asked, pulling my hand out from his, and playing with my ring finger.
“I just didn’t know how to bring it up, especially after hearing about your mother.” The room fell into silence, his heart rate monitor the only noise within the four white walls.
“I just want to say, before I…” Danny stopped, breathing in slightly. “Before I die. You were the reason I wanted to get out of bed every morning, and the reason I never wanted to go to bed every night. You made me a better person, and made my last month the most amazing thing I could ever hope for.”
Danny reached for my hand, his usually warm hand now ice cold.
“Danny, I did nothing compared to what you have done for me. You pushed me to live again, to smile and laugh and to stop worrying about the past and live in the present. I love you Danny, I don’t know how I am going to survive without you,”
Fresh tears had begun to fall down my face, Danny’s fingers catching them before they reached my lips.
“You are going to do the final thing on that list, you are going to find a man who loves you more than anything in this world, you are going to have millions of babies, and you are going to lead a happy, full life.” Y tears began to fall harder, my breathe catching in my throat.
“You remember the final thing on my bucket list? The one that was so crossed out you couldn’t read it?” I nodded, wiping away some of the many tears.
“It said ‘Fall in love’. I didn’t think that was possible until I met you, but I have. I am truly in love with you Katie; forever and always you will be in my heart. Don’t you forget that that okay?”
I nodded, my chin quivering more than ever before.
“Promise me Katie, that my death won’t hold you back from life, because I onl want the best for you, just like your mother. Can you promise me you wont go back?”
“I promise,”
I stood up, placing a kiss on his lips when the heart rate monitor began to beep louder and faster.
“Danny?” I asked, watching as his eyes began to flutter close. I pressed the help button and ran into the hall, screaming for help.
Nurses and doctors flooded into the room, speaking quickly to each other. One of the nurses lead me into the hallway, as I screamed Danny’s name, trying to fight past the nurses to be by his side.
We sat there, Danny’s family and I, in the hallway. Waiting for the doctors to come out and say something to us, to tell us that Danny would be okay.
