THEN

Bare feet padded across the stone floor of the steps as I ran down them with her. She gave me a light shove forward making me hop off the last two onto the basement floor. "Go faster." she giggled out running past me down the dark hallway.

"Wait up!" I ran faster as we passed each door already knowing which one to go to; we had been down here a lot. More than we should have been. Father had said one was already too many times down here. She had stopped at the end of the hall dim lights illuminating the numbers on the door. She gave me a wicked grin and pushed it open the creaking echoing down the hall. We slipped inside and closing the door behind us. I walked up slowly to the tall container placing my hand feeling the coldness engulf me; a shiver ran down my spine.

I jumped at the sound of Evie dragging a metal chair towards me. I raised my eyebrow, "I want to see what he looks like."

"I've seen what he looks like."

She rolled her eyes, "You were like four." I watched her climb onto the chair pressing both hands against the glass staring inside. "He's pretty." She told me tauntingly. I groaned getting up next to her too look inside. His eyes were closed, but his face was peaceful as he slept. He had long dark hair and some sort of mask covering up half his face. "Didn't you say he had a metal arm?"

"I was four remember." I reminded her in a mocking voice. "But yeah he had a metal arm the last time I saw him."

"Why do they keep him in here?" She asked stepping down from the chair.

I shrugged still looking inside. "I'm not sure. Father said I'm too young to understand."

"Do you want to marry him?" She sang out going through other stuff around the room.

"I'm too young for that." My face was pressed to the glass glued to the man inside.

"My cousin got married off to some guy when she was 15." She dropped something on the ground. "That's only three years older than you now." I didn't respond. "Maybe that's why they make him sleep, to keep him alive until you're a little older."

"No," I turned to face her. "He's not here for that." I hopped down watching her come towards me. "He helps daddy with his work or something like that."

She gave me a friendly shove, "So, you think he's cute." She went back to rummaging through stuff. All she cared about was boys and marriage.

"I-!" A hissing noise cut me off. "What did you do?" She came back towards me as smoke fell onto the floor as the encasing slowly rose upward.

"Nothing!" She gabbed me pulling me back. "What's happening Katarina?" I looked at her face fear in both our eyes.

"I don't know!" I did what any scared twelve year old would do and started crying, We ran toward the door pulling the handle, but it didn't move. "Did you lock it?"

"No!" Evie was full on sobbing glancing between the door and back at the man. Smoke was clearing from around him letting us see him in his full glory. He was a built man his metal arm beginning to make a humming noise as it woke up. "Help!" Evie banged on the door. "Help us!" I couldn't take my eyes off him as his eyes opened up suddenly staring back at me full of rage. "We're going to die!" Evie shouted as she fell forward as the door opened revealing my father behind it.
