"Silene!"
He's still calling me. This time even more agitated. I can feel a lot of things in his voice — anger, worry, desperation, fear, even a hint of love. Juan was expressing them all in just a single word, my name.
No matter how much I wish I could do something, the sad reality is that I can't. I can't find the way to move my lips, I can't even follow the contour of his silhouette with my eyes, I can't feel my body and, at some point, I lose even that small sense of blinking. I'm lost.
"Get out of the car!" someone screams.
At least I can still hear.
Juan remains silent, but the sound of his gun being loaded is probably betraying him.
"Put the gun down, don't try to fool us," another voice says. "If you want to save your girlfriend you'd better cooperate."
Fuck! I hate to be the object of blackmailing in all these scandals. But a thing that makes me feel even worse is the fact that I'm his weakness. Maybe if I wasn't here, half dead, he could've been able to make an escape plan for both of us.
Probably I hit my head in the moment when he pushed the breaks. Otherwise I can't find another explanation for my stupidity. I mean, I know I'm dumb, but not this dumb.
"Don't touch her!" he screams back at our attackers. "She has nothing to do with this. Your boss wants me, not her."
I wonder who the fuck is their boss. Apparently, we weren't having any enemies left. But, my brain is too slow too think too much now, so I prefer to leave this topic for later.
"Then get out of the damn car!" The guys seem angry, like they don't have too much time left.
"No," Juan replies calmly. "First, you let me take her to a hospital and then I'm coming with you."
The response is just a conglomeration of grotesque laughters coming from so many directions. Only now I realize that we're probably surrounded.
"Have you heard him?" a new voice asks. "He wants to take his bitch to the hospital."
That's a good question too. Juan and I were always saying that no matter what happens we resist without going to a hospital, because that's the fastest way for the police to track us. So, I'm either in a really bad condition and he'd risk even my own freedom, or it's just a trick so that he can make a plan for us to escape. At this point I'm inclined to believe it's the second option, because I don't feel that bad.
"Please," Juan adds in a very nice voice.
I might know what he's doing. Buying time. But what for?
"Oh, he's beginning us," the first voice says followed by a mocking laughter. "You're not the one who's making the requests here."
Juan sighs. I guess he's running out of options.
"Just get the fuck out of that goddamn car!" another one screams. "The boss won't like this."
"Okay, fine," Juan says calmly, but I can sense the agitation behind his voice.
The next thing I hear is the car's door opening.
"Don't try to do anything stupid," one of the attackers says, "I don't have time for this, neither you're in the position to do it, since were holding your girlfriend at gunpoint."
Amazing. Now I know that I have at least one gun pointed to my head. But who knows how dramatic are these guys? Maybe they're aiming for my heart.
"I won't do anything," Juan says from a distance. "See, my hands are up, I don't have any gun with me."
So he left his gun in the car. I hate myself for not being able to see anything. Just a simple hit took me out of the game for good. I really have to start getting tougher, but every time I say that we're in the middle of an entire shit situation.
I hear car's door opening again, but this time it's on my side. A pair of strange hands lift me up.
"Don't touch her," Juan screams. "I'd do whatever you want, just leave her."
"Calm down, man, we're not gonna do anything to her," the first attacker says, and I believe that this one's some sort of chief of the entire operation. "You said you wanna take her to the hospital. We'll take care of her, I can promise you that. Our boss might be cruel, but he's just."
I don't get why Juan never asked them who's their boss. Probably, he already knows.
"What is that?" someone screams.
But, before I get to think of something, the air is filled with the most pleasing sound — gunshots. Of course Juan did something to save us.
"Silene!" he screams over the entire chaos.
I hear the sound before realizing what happened. I can't see, I can't talk and I can't scream over the fact that Juan's words started to sound like he's chocking. Another gunshot, only this one was closer. The bullet was freed by one of these assholes and I'm praying to all the existent gods in the universe for it to have missed the man that I love the most.
"Juan!" someone screams from behind.
I don't know from where I know this voice, but it feels like I heard it so many times before only these new inflexions were new — panic, fear and an unexpected amount of pain.
The sound of the guns being fired is too loud for me to understand anything. It's like I'm in the middle of a battlefield, yet my body hasn't been hit by any new amount of pain which makes me think that I'm either protected or I can't feel anything anymore.
And, right in the moment when I realize that the voice belongs to Rodrigo, I'm hit by something new. A huge amount of pain and an infinite darkness that takes over my entire existence.
