We were halfway through the hike, back to the small village where we've parked our rented car.

Our party of four had fallen behind quite a good distance from the other tourists, mainly due to Tee. He was exhausted and we kept stopping, taking breaks so that he could rest. I ran different options in my mind. I wanted to help him, take care of him.

Maybe I could call for a chopper? Unfortunately, the stormy weather won't permit that. Or we could camp out here till morning, till the situation improves? The climate will be too stormy and cold, we'll be frozen by morning. What if we carry him, Pran, Max, and I, alternately? That will ultimately slow us all down and we will be caught in the middle of the blizzard anyway. Since all the options are increasingly moot, we kept moving forward despite the slow progress.

The path wasn't even uneven if not a little loose with stones and rocks under a layer of snow. I should have kept him beside me. I should have held his hand or shouldn't have taken my eyes off to regard the rapidly darkening sky. If I did then I would have seen how the strong gusts of wind kept battering against his slim body making him shudder every time.

It was my fault.

I was to blame that Tee missed his footing and twisted his ankle stepping on a loose stone. I wasn't quick enough to catch him when he lost his balance, fell, and rolled down the valley.

I should have been alert.

For a moment I was petrified, not understanding what was happening. When something bad happens to someone close to your heart it takes you by surprise and makes you immobilize.

Pran and Max were faster. They dashed down to help. Their yells made me snap out of my state. I ran down the valley, slipping and sliding in the slope to reach the other three. My heart thudded erratically. Please don't let anything happen to him! I prayed over and over again while I ran down at a break-neck speed without even caring for my own safety.

"Tee!" I cried as I approached them.

Pran and Max parted and let me take control.

Tee is lying immobile in a wet puddle, covered in glaciers and dirt.

Not caring about anything but him I slumped down on the wet ground and gathered him in my arms.

Please don't let anything happen to him. Please, God!

As I placed two fingers at the side of his neck my heart squeezed painfully. I stared at the pallid skin of his face and closed shut eyes, long lashes darker than usual.

Against my fingers I felt a pulse, his life running in his veins strong and steady.

He's alive.
