"Don is calling you, Khun?"

I lifted my eyes from the sheet of music I was transcribing.

"I'll be right there."

Lowering the lid of the piano carefully, I continued to hum the tune in my head. Walking through the corridors of the Piniwat manor, I reached dad's office with a smiling face.

"Dad?" I found my brother Kamnan, sitting with dad. It's not unusual since my older brother is the underboss.

"Tee," Dad smiled back, signalling me to come inside. "I have something important to talk to you."

I was curious because dad never involved me in his business. Since small age, I found my calling- music. I have no head for business. It could be because my mother had been a singer - a performer. Dad wasn't disappointed. He just let me do my own thing.

"What is it, Dad?" I sat in front of my dad and half-brother, currently Don and Underboss of the family.

"I have found a good man for you, Tee," Dad looked at me under his spectacles.

My lips parted in surprise. I was rendered speechless.

"I have arranged your engagement with the Kreepolrerk heir," Dad leaned back on his throne. "You will wed him next year."

Engagement? Marriage? So soon?

"D-dad, I'm only seventeen," I stammered but finally found my voice. "Sure it doesn't have to be this soon?" I never contradict dad but I don't want to tie down this soon. I have plans for myself. I want to create music, travel the world, and meet new people.

"Tee," Dad sighed. "Listen to me, son. I know you're young but I'm getting old. Soon, I'm going to hand over my duties to Kamnan. Then your brother won't have time to take care of you. He will be busy with duties." I shifted my eyes to my brother. He has a sympathetic look in his eyes. P'Kamnan understands. He too was forced to marry as a political union.

"I'm not going to be a burden, Dad." I mumbled.

"I know son," My father leaned forward with a fond smile in his eyes. I know that he loves me so much. Since my mother chose her career over him, it broke his heart. I was the only reminder of his love for my mom. "This man Tae Darvid, he's the current Kreepolrerk Don, and he's a very capable man. He will take care of you." I wasn't paying attention much. I don't care who I marry or if I don't marry at all. I just want to live my life before tied down to someone. "I will feel relieved if I knew that you will be cared for in the future. I can close my eyes without any worry, knowing you're in good hands." Dad said with lots of feeling in his voice. Why is he talking about dying?

"Dad, please don't say that." I cried, jumping out of my chair and rushing to his side. Dropping on my knees, I placed my head on his lap. "I will do as you say, dad," I mumbled. I felt his hand patting my head. "Don't talk about dying."

"I'm only looking out for your future, son." Dad's voice came through a haze. "Tae will take care of you."

I will do anything he says.
