"P'Kim!" I greeted my childhood friend as I slipped inside the Mercedes my brother had sent to pick me from the airport.

"How have you been, nong Tee?" P'Kim smiled. "I can't believe I haven't seen you in...." He spread his arms. "How long has it been since the wedding?"

"About eight months, Phi," I offered him a faint smile, leaning my head against the headrest as the vehicle pulled out of the parking lot.

"You look different," P'Kim regarded me, curiously.

"How so?" I rolled my head to look at him.

"Just that you've changed from the boy we sent off eight months ago," He pursed his lips.

"Obviously," I chuckled softly. "I've grown a lot since then."

"Eight months is a long time to be away from your family. Don't stay away from us for too long, nong Tee." P'Kim touched my arm. "Everyone misses you."

"Me too, P'Kim," I exhaled deeply. "How is dad?" I twisted around in the car seat to face him, wanting to know more details.

"Don is doing okay now. He was already discharged from the hospital and been taken home as we speak," P'Tae reassured me. Good. Then I'll be seeing him in a few hours.

"P'Kim?" I held my best friend's hand. "What really happened to dad?"

"He had a stroke," P'Kim shrugged trying to act nonchalant. "He's fine now. Don't worry." He patted my arm. I know P'Kim is deliberately trying to lighten the mood. But I always see through his façade easily. After all, he's one of my best friends, I've known him all my life.
